Man denies causing death of Matthie

A Smith’s man formally denied causing the death of 21-year-old Ezariah “Ezra” Matthie.

George Simmons this morning pleaded not guilty to a charge of causing Mr Matthie’s death by driving without due care and attention on Ord Road in Paget on February 29.

Mr Matthie was riding on a motorcycle when he was involved in a collision reportedly involving his vehicle and a truck.

The 43-year-old defendant is expected to return to the courts tomorrow for a mention date.

Also appearing during a busy arraignments session this morning was 23-year-old Quincy Simmons, who pleaded not guilty to charges of possessing component parts of a Hi-Point 9mm C-9 firearm in an incident on May 29, 2015.

He also denied an alternate charge of handling the weapon on an unknown date between July 7, 2010 and May 29, 2015.

Mr Simmons was released on bail, and is set to return to the courts later this week for the matter to be mentioned.

Meanwhile, Jahfari Raynor, 23, denied stabbing Rayheim Smith in an altercation at this year’s Non-Mariners Race.

The Overview Hill resident pleaded not guilty to a charge of wounding Mr Smith at the popular event on July 31.

That case is set to return to the Supreme Court tomorrow morning for a mention date.

Omar Davy, 35, meanwhile denied a charge of conspiring to export cash, representing the proceeds of criminal activity, from the island between an unknown date and August 12, 2016.

The court heard that the Crown intend to join the matter to that of 24-year-old Zoe Bennett, who is awaiting trial after denying a charge of possessing more than $40,000 representing the proceeds of illegal activity.
