Nineteen school pupils have visited reinsurance firm Hamilton Re in a bid by the firm to raise the profile of the industry.

The pupils, from public and private schools across the island, spent the afternoon at Hamilton Re’s Pitts Bay Road offices as part of a series of events to promote Insurance Careers Month.

The youngsters met company CEO Kathleen Reardon, who talked about the type of property and casualty risks the firm deals with and toured its offices.

Dakota Lamb, from the Berkeley Institute, said: “Spending time with the Hamilton team was an eye-opening experience that sparked my interest to get into the industry.”

Malini Romeo, a pupil at Warwick Academy, added: “As a young person wanting a career in reinsurance, I am grateful for the advice the team provided.”

The pupils were chosen after a competition which quizzed them on what they wanted to study after school, why they wanted to visit the firm and what they were interested in.

The visit took place earlier this month and included talks from Hamilton Re specialists, including vice-president and head of claims Rebecca Adderley, who challenged the group to identify what might qualify as a claim with a quiz featuring unusual claims she had dealt with in her career.

The youngsters were also given overviews of the role of data and analytics in selecting risk and the legal aspects of reinsurance.
