Women’s football will return for the first time since 2010 when the four-team league kicks off this evening with seven-a-side matches at the Clyde Best Centre of Excellence field.

The Bermuda Football Association, in conjunction with its women’s committee, has been working to bring women’s football back, remembering the days of teams such as Rude Girls, North Village Lady Rams and Dandy Stars.

This season the teams are named Longtails, Kiskadees, Cahows and Herons, playing games on Friday evenings at BFA Field.

Tonight there will be four matches of 15-minute halves, with Herons playing Longtails and Kiskadees taking on Cahows at 7pm, followed at 8pm by Herons against Cahows and Kiskadees against Longtails. Eventually there is the plan to feature full 11-a-side games, once more players join the league.

“The women’s game continues to grow worldwide and we must do all that we can to promote the game in Bermuda,” the BFA said in a statement yesterday.

“Currently, the league will start with four teams consisting of a blend of seasoned veterans with young and extremely talented players. Many of the players featured in the league attend local high schools or high schools and colleges abroad.

“This certainly bodes well for the future of Bermuda’s women’s game both domestically and internationally. We are also pleased that each team will be coached by women who have successfully completed the Fifa Women’s Coaching Course held last year.”

Coaches include Cheyra Bell and Dominique Richardson of the Longtails, two up-and-coming young players just a few years ago. Suzette Albouy will coach the Kiskadees, Allanette Hayward and Selina Bascome the Cahows and Dionne Dowling and Vinze Zuill the Herons.
