Smith: We still have a job to do

Bermuda skipper Khano Smith said his side should rightly celebrate their win over Trinidad and Tobago but the victory would mean nothing if they didn’t beat Guyana on Tuesday.Another victory would leave Bermuda needing back-to-back wins over Barbados to stand any chance of progressing from the group stage and Smith wants to make sure yesterday’s famous win isn’t wasted.“We have to take this one and bank it because if we don’t win on Tuesday then this means nothing,” said Smith. “We still have to come and do a job, we have to temper our celebrations.“Yes, we enjoy it tonight, but after that we have to move on because there is another big job coming up on Tuesday. Guyana beat us, so they are a very good team as well. So we need to win Tuesday to give ourselves any chance, just like we did tonight.”Smith was full of praise for goalscorers Antwan Russell and Nahki Wells and said he never doubted that Bermuda would create plenty of chances to score.“At home we created more than we did in Trinidad because we had the support behind us,” said Smith, “so I knew we would create chances tonight and we took them. There were two fantastic finishes which I saw as two quality finishes not defensive lapses.”Bermuda’s performance last night went some way to erasing the unhappy memories of the 2008 defeat when Trinindad won 2-0 at the National Sports Centre and knocked Bermuda out of the World Cup Qualifiers. However, Smith said he wasn’t bothered about the past, only the future.“We’re past that, we’re all about now,” said Smith. ‘We’re just focusing on this time, we’re not about revenge, we’re about moving forward right now and revenge isn’t even entering our minds.”Bermuda head coach Devarr Boyles was just as happy as his captain with the result and said he hoped that the win would encourage more people to come out and support the team against Guyana.“We hope the crowd is better against Guyana,” said Boyles. “Tonight they were in good voice and hopefully we can fill the stadium. Tonight we came close to it. Hopefully this result encourages Bermudians as well as the rest of the teams in Caribbean because to beat Trinidad is huge, whether it’s home or away.“We’re over the moon, but we have to temper it (our joy) because we have three more matches.”With Bermuda’s next two games at home Boyles said the win had put his team in a position to challenge for the top spot in the group.“Our next two games are at home,” said Boyles. “It was always difficult to start with our first two games on the road, we were hoping to get something out of those matches, it didn’t happen which put a lot of pressure on us today to get a result.“This first result kind of sets it up for the next match, if or when we get something from the Guyana match then we’ll be nicely placed.”
