Dill clinches series title in final race showdown
Series on Saturday at the National Sports Centre, edging out Chayce Smith in the 11-12 age group.
Five of the six age group winners had already been decided prior to the weekend, so much of the attention was focused on the boys race which saw Dill and Smith battling for the title.
In a departure from the other four races in the inaugural series which were all held on the road, Saturday's last event saw the juniors running over 1500 metres and the 13-15 year olds competing over 3000 metres.
Dill and Smith soon opened up a lead on the field in their race but it was Dill who made his move with two laps remaining to secure first place in 5:05.5 with Smith second and a fast-finishing Coyatito Smith third.
The boys 8-10 age group saw Kor-Von Tucker turn in a tremendous performance as he clocked 5:22.7 to edge Cody Lima and Carlo Paynter. Due to traffic problems, Tucker and Paynter had to run in a later heat. Lima, having snatched four firsts previously, had already secured the series title.
The girls 8-10 age group also saw some close races. Kimberley Fisher, having finished second three times to Jessica Palmer, caused a minor upset as she finished in 5:43.2 to beat Palmer into second place. Palmer, with four firsts in previous races, had already won the series. Ashley Brooks took third in a strong field.
One of the best performances of the day came from Henry Talbot who ran away with the boys 13-15 3000 metres in a quick time of 10:11.8. Mark Morrison, who won the first four races in the series and the age group title, didn't compete but would have had his work cut out as Talbot blitzed the field.
Nick Taylor was second in the 13-15 boys with a much improved Jeremy Shrubb third.
As expected Shar-Dae Whitter and Tiffany Eatherley dominated the girls 13-15 3000 metres with Whitter showing her track prowess to record a comfortable win in 11:59.3. Series winner Eatherley was second and Ashley Kirkpatrick third after edging out Melissa DeSilva.
In the girls 11-12 age group there were no surprises as group winner Flora Duffy, the Front Street Mile record holder, held off a spirited challenge from the fast improving Chloe Kempe and Shay-la Whitter to win in 5:39.9. Kempe was second and Whitter third.
Race Director Dave Morrison said he was pleased with the track format for the final event in the series, particularly as the races were run in conjunction with a Bermuda Pacers meet which featured other track and field events and showcased Richard Walcott, a recent silver medallist in the 800 metres at the Carifta Games.
Altogether 167 youngsters signed up for the KPMG series. The age group winners will be travelling with coach Troy Custodio to Ashfield, North Carolina to participate in a week-long cross-country/running camp from July 17 to 24.
Accompanying the group will be one lucky draw prize winner, drawn from all participants in the series who competed in at least four of the races.
Shar-Dae Whitter and Henry Talbot, the second place finishers in the 13-15 age groups, will also accompany the team, although at their own expense.
