Goater strike just enough for Hornets
Dandy Town 1 St George’s 0Tomiko Goater struck late in the first half to hand Dandy Town an important victory over a resilient St George’s at St John’s Field yesterday.Hornets dominated from start to finish but lacked cutting edge and should have won by a far greater margin had they not squandered a hatful of glorious scoring opportunities. In the first half Angelo Simmons was the chief culprit, missing several chances to give the hosts the lead, and it took until the 44th minute for Goater to break the deadlock from a rebound. After the break, Hornets continued to enjoy the lion’s share of possession but struggle in the final third through a mixture of poor decisions, bad execution and sloppy finishing.Simmons should have done better after rounding St George’s goalkeeper Charles Marshall Jr before deciding to pull back for Seion Darrell when it would have perhaps been better to shoot., especially considering his pass failed to find his team-mate.Substitute Dashun Butterfield came the closest to increasing Hornets’ advantage but saw his first-time effort from Aquino Grant’s cross cannon back off the post.Moments later midfielder Kwonde Lathan forced a good save from Marshall before firing the rebound well wide with the goal at his mercy. With head coach Cymande Davis making a playing comeback, former St George’s keeper Freddy Hall now of Toronto FC took charge of team affairs from the technical area. But luckily for Hornets, the East Enders showed little in the way of attacking verve with Hornets shot stopper Daniel Johnson a virtual spectator for much of the game.Wilkinson admitted his team’s display was below par but said picking up the three points had always been the main objective.“We always knew today was going to be a battle and I was proud of the character we showed,” he said.“I thought we defended well and it was pleasing to keep another shut-out for the second successive game.“I was disappointed with our finishing, though, and I think we need to take more responsibility on front of goal.“Missing so many chances could have come back to haunt us as it has it the past.“It was a dogfight and claiming the win to close the gap on (Southampton) Rangers was always our priority.”Dandy Town: D Johnson, K Lathan, D Ming, K Tucker, S Tuzo, F Frankson, J Stowe, A Simmons (A Grant, 75), R Wells (D Butterfield, 75), S Darrell, K WadeSubstitutes not used: B MinorsGoals: Goater, 44Yellow cards: Grant, FranksonSt George’s: C Marshall Jr, E Signor, D Signor, P Anderson, C Davis, J Daniels, M Tucker, J Dickinson, J Bassett, W Jones, Hodsall (M Paynter, 45)Referee: L RaynorMan of the match: K Tucker (Hornets)
