Wells goal guides Huddersfield to safety
Nahki Wells moved a step closer to the 20-goal mark with his eighteenth strike of the season in Huddersfield Town’s 1-1 draw away to Rotherham United.
Wells struck a 22nd-minute leveller from outside of the box after Greg Halford had given the home side the lead in the tenth minute of yesterday’s Sky Bet Championship game.
Halford, the former Sunderland and Wolverhampton Wanderers utility player, scored with a right-footed effort after a corner from Richard Wood, before Wells hit back with a left-footed strike into the bottom corner.
Wells, the Bermuda striker, also had a goal disallowed for offside.
David Wagner, the Huddersfield head coach, said he was encouraged by the character his side showed to earn a point, although he believed his players had been wasteful in possession.
“It isn’t the easiest challenge if you are 1-0 down at Rotherham,” Wagner said. “This wasn’t one of the best matches I have watched in my career but I was pleased with the fighting attitude my squad showed today.
“Throw ins and corners are part of the game and they were dangerous. We did OK but from the technical side we were a little bit sloppy and had some problems with the first touch.”
Huddersfield, who are at home to Birmingham City on Saturday, are sixteenth in the table and the point means they are now safe from relegation.
At the top of the Championship Michael Keane’s injury-time equaliser against leaders Middlesbrough kept promotion hopefuls Burnley second on goal difference from Brighton and Hove Albion yesterday.
While the top-two clash ended in a dramatic 1-1 draw at Turf Moor, Brighton thumped Queens Park Rangers 4-0 to press their claim for automatic promotion to the riches of the Barclays Premier League.
Middlesbrough have 86 points with Burnley and Brighton level on 84. Hull City and Derby County both won and are tied on 76 with Sheffield Wednesday, who drew 0-0 at home to relegation-threatened Milton Keynes Dons, in the last play-off place on 70.
Aitor Karanka’s Middlesbrough took the lead through Jordan Rhodes in the 70th minute, his fifth goal since joining from Blackburn in January, after narrowly missing out when Albert Adomah hit the bar in the first half.
Burnley looked like slipping back into the play-off places until Keane bundled home from a half-cleared corner on the left two minutes into stoppage time.
The goal ended the visitors’ six-match winning streak and stretched Burnley’s unbeaten run in the league to 20 games.
At the other end, Charlton Athletic were relegated to League One after a goalless draw at bottom club Bolton Wanderers.
Milton Keynes Dons look doomed to join them, their draw at Sheffield Wednesday leaving them nine points adrift of safety with three games remaining.
In League One, Rai Simons, the Bermuda striker, was an unused substitute in Chesterfield’s 1-1 draw at home to Doncaster Rovers, while Reggie Lambe played the entire match in Mansfield Town’s 3-2 win away to Exeter City in League Two.
