Fitness boost for Evans

Injured 800 metre runner Aaron Evans should be fit for international action this summer but is likely to miss the NCAA Championships.Evans feared the hamstring injury he sustained last weekend while competing for the University of Georgia would rule him out of the CAC Senior Championships, World Championships and the Pan-Am Games. He wrote on his Facebook page: “No regionals, no nationals, no worlds . . . . Bad decisions, good intentions.”But yesterday it emerged Evans’ injury isn’t as serious as initially thought and the former Warwick Academy student could be back competing by the July.Donna Watson, the Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president, said Evans would “probably not be able to compete” in next weekend’s NCAA Championship qualifiers.Evans won a bronze at last year’s Championships.Watson said: “Our overseas athletes were having a rest this week as they prepare for the NCAA qualifiers next weekend.“Aaron Evans qualified but due to his injury will probably not be able to compete as he will be having treatment over the next six weeks, hopefully will be able to compete in the international meets this summer.”Evans’ Bulldogs team-mate Latroya Darrell and Jasmine Brunson, of Clemson University, will both be pushing for a place in the NCAA finals.n The BTFA held the IAAF World Athletics Day at the National Sports Centre (NSC) at the weekend.Hosted by The Flyers Track Club, the event saw Carifta Games silver medallist Shaquille Dill post a personal best in the 800 metres in a time of one minute 50.18 seconds, while World Youth Championships hopeful Jeneko Place ran the 400m in 49.71.Watson said: “It was a wonderful event with over 120 athletes participating. We had children from the age of four-years-old up to Masters athletes.“This is an annual event and is held in most of the countries that come under the IAAF.” The Track and Field National Championships, featuring a 10K road race for the first time, will be held at the NSC on June 9-10.
