Brangman's big jump qualifies for top US meet
Deon Brangman qualified for the NACAC Track and Field Under-23 Championships in Mexico with his impressive performance at the National Track and Field Championships over the weekend.
Brangman, who competed at last summer's Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro, won the Male Open division with a jump of 2.05 metres at the National Sports Centre to cement his place in Mexico.
Also competing at the NSC were Olympic hopefuls Arantxa King and Tyrone Smith who won their respective categories, as they continue their quests to reach the Olympics.
The pair of long jumpers are expected to be given wild card entries to compete in Beijing but can make absolutely sure by meeting the qualifying mark at their upcoming championship meets overseas.
King will head to Poland to compete at the up coming World Junior Championships, while Smith will test his ability at the CAC Senior Championships in Colombia.
Along with Smith and Brangman, who has also qualified for the CAC Senior Championships, Xavier James, Aaron Evans, Michael Donowa, Andrea Jackson and LaTroya Darrell will be leaving Bermuda this week to participate in the CAC Seniors Championships in California, Colombia.
Tre Houston will join King and head off to Poland for the World Juniors Championships.
"I want to be ready for the World Juniors which is being held in Poland this week", said King.
"I have a broad idea of what to expect in Poland and who I will be up against.
"I feel as long as I can be consistent and jump in the high 20 or 21's that I will do what is necessary to place and have a good meet."
With the distinct possibility of representing Bermuda at the Games, King stated that it is every child's dream to represent their country at the highest level.
"It is an amazing thought to be thinking about competing and more so representing your country at the highest level of competition.
"Just to go for the experience and to represent Bermuda would be a dream come true."
Smith is centimetres away from the qualifying standard and also harbours ambitions of reaching the Olympics through qualifying, not by wild card.
"I feel like I will get the standard in the next couple meets. We will take it one jump at time and see how it goes from there.
"I am really looking forward to going to Colombia.
"I always enjoy and look forward to going to South America and the Caribbean to compete.
"I always welcome challenge and to me it is a blessing to be representing Bermuda in what I do. Just to be given the opportunity to go to the Games is something every athlete dreams of.
"To walk into the Olympic Stadium will be amazing and it will be an amazing feeling."
