Weldon hammers hat-trick as St. David's are thrashed
Ellington Weldon scored the first hat-trick of the season as St. David's were hammered last night at Devonshire Rec. in the Premier Division.
The Islanders, seeking a good start to the campaign to ease their relegation fears, were competitive in the first half in which only Weldon's first goal in injury time separated the two teams.
But St. David's ran out of ideas in the second half as Wolves blasted four goals in the space of 15 minutes to put the points in the bag as they romped to their first win of the season.
St. David's could have taken the lead after just 80 seconds when a long ball upfield by Del Hollis resulted in captain Chae Simmons having his shot from inside the box blocked by goalkeeper Cymande Davis.
For most of the half play was even with St. David's forced to make an early substitution when defender Michael Simons limped off after just 17 minutes.
Wolves saved their best two scoring chances for the last two minutes of the first half, the first after 44 minutes which resulted in a good reflex save from Sidney Minors to a snap shot from Nathan Webb.
Then, when it looked like the teams would go in at the half all even, Weldon struck with a simple side-foot from five yards after Webb squared the ball back to him from the right side of the box.
Webb also had a hand in the second goal after 56 minutes when he played another short pass to Wendon from the right side and this time the neat flick over the 'keeper's head found the net inside the far post.
After that it was all one way traffic as Wolves were clearly enjoying themselves. Just as Peter Sampson was being replaced by Dane Simmons, the third goal was going in, this one scored by Webb after following up on a freekick that was parried by Minors.
Three minutes later it was 4-0 with Weldon completing his hat-trick with a low shot into the bottom corner after slack defending by St. David's who were beginning to look a beaten side.
The best goal of the game came in the 71st minute when a freekick from on the right side by Cory Smith came back out for Tory Davis to run on and smash a left-footed shot into the roof of the net, just under the crossbar.
Despite the promising start it wasn't to be St. David's night as substitute Rudell Pitcher missed an easy chance after being put through the Wolves defence by a Chae Simmons pass. Then Aaron Lugo had a goalbound shot cleared off the line following a Simmons corner.
In injury time St. David's lost their most experienced defence when Shae Pitcher was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Promoted PHC will look for their second straight win of the season when they travel to St. John's Field to meet another unbeaten side, Dandy Town, in the Premier Division tomorrow.
PHC handed North Village their first loss a week ago and will be looking for a similiar upset against Town, already one of the teams to beat this season.
Southampton Rangers, Village and Somerset will also be looking for their first league wins of the season. Rangers travel to St. David's tomorrow to meet a Boulevard team that, by all reports, were fortunate to escape with all three points against St. David's in their season opener. And they did it with a stand-in goalkeeper as both their goalkeepers, Andre Hendrickson and Mitchell Steede, were out injured, forcing Vernon Symonds between the posts.
Village meet Devonshire Colts at White Hill field in what promises to be a close match while Somerset take on Vasco who are just off a good week, winning their opening league encounter and also advancing to the semi-finals of the Martonmere Cup.
In the three Second Division matches, Social Club entertain Ireland Rangers at Bernard Park in a clash between two winners last weekend, while St. George's host Prospect at Wellington Oval and Paget meet Hamilton Parish at White Hill field.
Valley have been awarded the points against new team Cleveland in the Commercial League today, Division B, because Cleveland don't have enough players registered. Cleveland also defaulted to Bermuda Pest Control last weekend.
