Zebras seal third place with win

A spirited fightback by already-doomed Southampton Rangers was clinically quashed by PHC?s Cecoy Robinson in the dying stages of yesterday?s Premier Division final round.

Switching wings, the speedy midfielder struck in the 43rd and 45th minutes ? the first easily one of the goals of the season ? to put the exclamation mark on a 4-1 triumph at Southampton Oval as another year of football ended.

Robinson, who had been busy on the flanks all match, took matters into his own hands first with a diagonal thunderbolt, unleashed from beyond the area, as he cut inside the left wing after being fed by Kevin Lambe.

Travelling with the full force of his right boot behind it, the ball rocked the net?s right corner before Rangers custodian Gerald Simons could move.

That strike ? the visitors? third of the afternoon ? left no doubt about the outcome with a two-goal cushion to PHC who were then 3-1 up. Two minutes later Robinson was at it again, dribbling the length of the left wing from well inside his team?s half before cutting in on the byline and deftly flicking the ball over Simons? head into the same section of the net he had previously scored.

Referee Jenny Villamarin promptly blew the final whistle and Rangers, who plummeted into the First Division two rounds ago, trudged thankfully from the pitch ? the wind knocked out of them by Robinson whose heroics continued to be saluted by his team-mates.

The result completed a satisfying return to the top flight for coach Mark Wade and the Zebras who cemented third place in the league and the $6,000 that comes with it.

Showing the cool efficiency that made them title contenders for the majority of the season, PHC grabbed the ascendancy as early as the sixth minute when striker Antwon Russell latched onto a long ball from his brother, Tokia, in defence and outran three Rangers players before drilling the ball across Simons and into the net?s left side.

PHC could well have rushed to a greater advantage with Tokia Russell, Philip Anderson and Robinson all coming close to the mark. However, Rangers ? gradually exhibiting imagination and flair ? equalised before their opposition struck again.

In the 36th minute, Neville Grant sent Travis Wilkinson on his way up the right flank and the latter powered forward and crossed to Sean Perinchief on the back post. Despite being injured in the process, the brave but lanky marksman nudged the ball past Jay Smith to even the scores 1-1.

Antwon Russell regained the lead for PHC in the 67th minute when Lambe, on the left wing, put him through for a close-range strike. However, with just a 2-1 margin in their favour, things were never sealed until Robinson?s fireworks.
