Man charged with Saturday's machete attack
A 23-year-old St. George's man was yesterday charged in connection with the machete attack on national squad cricketer George O'Brien Jr.
Dimitrius Gibbons appeared in Magistrates' Court where he was accused of unlawfully wounding Mr. O'Brien on July 19, causing grievous bodily harm. The attack was said to have taken place near Mount Road in St. David's around 8.30 pm.
Gibbons was represented by attorney Llewellyn Peniston.
As the offence is indictable, he was not asked to enter a plea.
Dressed in a black T-shirt and shorts, he remained silent throughout the proceedings, only speaking when asked his age.
Mr. O'Brien, the 25-year-old victim of the alleged attack is a key member of the St. George's cricket team and was expected to play in Cup Match next week.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo released Gibbons on $5,000 bail with a like surety. Gibbons is expected to return to Magistrates' Court for mention on August 5
Allied World donates $15,000 to Zoological Society
Young environmentalists will learn more about protecting the Island, thanks to a donation by Allied World Assurance Company to Bermuda Zoological Society (BZS).
For the second year, Allied World has given BZS a $15,000 grant for its top-rated education programme which boosts the science curricula of 6,000 students each year. Included in the programme are classes at Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo, field trips to nature reserves and marine parks aboard the BZS vessel Endurance, teaching kits for educators, and popular holiday camps that deliver environmental education to children as young as four.
BZS Education Officer Joseph Furbert said: "BZS is very proud of the many ways in which we support our community by offering numerous educational and family programmes. But we are mindful that without the support of sponsors like Allied World, we simply could not do it."
Motorcyclist remains in intensive care
A former Police officer who suffered serious head injuries in a collision with a car on Tuesday remained in intensive care last night.
The 28-year-old man, from St. George's, was said to be in a stable condition at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital yesterday evening.
Police were called to the scene of the collision on Parsons Road in Pembroke just before 6 p.m.
According to a spokesman, the motorcycle and car driven by an 85-year-old woman were travelling in opposite directions when they collided. The car driver, who is from Devonshire, was not injured. The Police have not made the names of those involved public, as per their usual policy.
Meanwhile another motorcyclist was injured in a crash yesterday morning this time involving a taxi. Police were called to the scene on Middle Road in Southampton, near Lighthouse Lane, around 8.25 a.m. The spokesman said it was unclear how the collision between the bike and taxi occurred. The rider suffered leg and arm injuries and abrasions to his forehead and was taken to hospital by ambulance.
The taxi driver, a 76 year old man from Sandys, was not injured.

Flatscreen TV, cash and jewellery taken in burglaries
A flatscreen television was stolen from a St. George's home on Monday, while cash and jewellery were taken from a Warwick home.
At some time between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m., Police said someone entered a Battery Road home and stole a 32 inch Samsung television.
The cash and jewellery are believed to have been taken from a Rubber Tree Lane home between 10.30 a.m. and 1.15 p.m. A Police spokesman said both burglaries took place while the homes were empty.
20 vehicles stolen in the past week
Almost 20 vehicles were stolen last week according to Police, but four have already been recovered.
Most of the vehicles stolen were auxiliary cycles or motorcycles, but one car, one motocross cycle and three pedal bikes were among the stolen vehicles. Most of the thefts occurred in the West and central parishes, with seven of the thefts being reported in Pembroke, three in Paget and three in Sandys.
A total of 44 accidents were reported last week, 20 of which resulted in some injury. In addition, Police arrested four people on suspicion of driving while impaired.
Hamilton Parish roundabout now in operation
A new roundabout at the junction of Wilkinson Avenue and North Shore Road in Hamilton Parish is now in operation.
The Ministry of Works and Engineering encourages motorists to be cautious when approaching the area.
Road users should be particularly vigilant until they become familiar with the roundabout. The motoring public can expect temporary signs, traffic controls and changed vehicle movements in the area.The Ministry of Works and Engineering apologises for any inconvenience this may cause.
