Zebras hope to have Town’s number
Holders Dandy Town Hornets have been drawn against PHC Zebras while Devonshire Cougars will play Robin Hood in the first of a FA Cup semi-final double-header at Police Field on April 10.
The draw, made yesterday at the Bermuda Football Association headquarters, pitted Cougars, the first team drawn, against Hood, a team seeking to make their first appearance in an FA final.
And while PHC have been paired with the league leaders, they will be encouraged by their record against them this season, beating Hornets twice in the cup competitions (Friendship Trophy and Dudley Eve Trophy) while losing both league matches.
“We have a lot of respect for Dandy Town, they play some good football,” said Jonathan Ball, the PHC president and defender who was at the draw. “We’ve been fortunate to get the better of them in cup competitions twice this year and we hope to continue that form in the FA Cup.
“We didn’t have an preference, in order to be the best you have to beat the best.”
PHC’s last FA Cup success came in 2008 when they beat Dandy Town 2-0 in the final. However, since 2010 only two teams have won the FA Cup, Cougars and Town three times each.
“I think our league form could have been better, but we have made it to two cup finals and hopefully we get a good result against Dandy Town to put us in the final,” Ball added.
“I think it’s going to be an entertaining game, something that the fans can look forward to and I definitely encourage them to come out on April 10.”
The quarter-final and semi-final draws for the Player Development League Knockout Cup was also made with North Village playing Town, Somerset Trojans taking on Devonshire Colts, PHC against Hamilton Parish and BAA clashing with Cougars.
The winners of Village-Town and Somerset-Colts will meet in one semi-final while PHC or Parish will meet BAA or Cougars in the other.
All matches will be played at BFA Field on dates yet to be confirmed. The final will precede the FA Cup final.
Meanwhile, Town will be looking to wrap up their eighth Premier Division title tomorrow, against the team that denied them the title last year, Trojans.
Town are determined there will be no slip-up this time and need only match Hood’s result against Boulevard tonight at Goose Gosling Field to maintain their unbeatable seven-point gap with only two matches remaining.
Tomorrow the league leaders will know what they need to do to clinch a fourth title in seven seasons, a third for Jomar Wilkinson as coach after leading the team to the summit in 2011-12 and 2013-14.
Town also wrapped up the title last time around by beating the defending champions, thrashing Devonshire Cougars 7-2 at Goose Gosling Field, before going on to win the league and FA double like they also did in 2012.
An equally important match, but for different reasons, will be played at Police Field where eighth- and ninth-placed Devonshire Colts and Southampton Rangers meet in a relegation battle.
A Colts victory would put them seven points clear of the drop zone with just two matches remaining, while a win for Rangers would move them to within a point of Colts.
Parish could be relegated even if they beat Village at Wellington Oval as victories for Somerset and Colts would send both Rangers and Parish into the First Division next season.
PHC meet Devonshire Cougars in a mid-table clash in which both teams are still aiming for a top-three finish. Both are on 20 points and only separated by goal difference. PHC will be without captain Cecoy Robinson who was sent off last weekend against Colts.
Zebras have not been able to sustain a serious title push but there are encouraging signs around PHC Field with the likes of Casey Castle and Kevin Richards rejoining the team this season.
“Casey coming back home has been good for us, he’s bagged a good amount of goals while Cecoy Robinson, our captain, has been leading,” Ball said. “The last time we played Dandy Town [Friendship Trophy] he got a hat-trick and we beat them 3-2 at BAA Field.
“Na’eem Griffiths has done well for us, he just broke into the Bermuda squad and got his first cap in St Kitts. He has definitely come into his own and gives us that stability at the back.”
