A Berkeley Institute pupil is on track to be the first to complete a head-start scheme run by the Bermuda Insurance Institute.

Imani Smith, aged 17, is expected to complete a two-year associates in general insurance within the next few months.

Ms Smith said: “I have to be focused and driven. It’s about motivating myself and prioritising long-term goals over a social life, but I like the things I’m learning.”

The programme is funded and backed by the insurance industry in partnership with the Department of Education and designed to provide students with knowledge about Bermuda’s main pillar.

It also gives students the opportunity to earn a recognised qualification and get work experience in BII-supporting companies.

Ms Smith said she was keen to start the programme as it was a stepping stone to a career in insurance.

She added she found some of the study materials tough — but that it was rewarding and interesting.

Ms Smith, after she leaves school in June, plans to study business economics and financial mathematics at university in the UK.

Dawnelle Walker, chief executive officer of the BII, said: “The insurance industry is a key pillar of our economy and our young people are the future of our country.

“At the BII, we see this programme as a win-win,” Dr Walker added.
