By the closing date on April 30, the company had received 925 essays. "The children used this year's Bermuda Fire and Marine calendar, which features endangered species, as a basis for their essays,'' said personnel manager Mrs.

Lynn Doyles.

"They picked whichever picture they wanted and wrote about it.'' The contest called for entries in three categories: ages 5-9, 10-13 and 14-16.

First place winners received a $50 book certificate, runners-up were given a $25 book certificate and third place entrants got a $15 certificate.

Each winner's school received a $1,000 donation towards its library for the purchase of environmental literature.

The winners for each age group were: (5-6 yrs.) -- Ramika Lambe, of Purvis Primary School; Ashley Chandler, of Port Royal Primary School; and Rieo Paynter, of St. David's Primary School.

(7-9 yrs.) -- Ryan Marshall, of Saltus Junior School; Shantae Hollis, of Frances Patton Primary School; Shimika Telford, of Southampton Glebe Primary School; and Andrew Stoneham, of Port Royal Primary School.

(10-13 yrs.) -- Katherine Dunleavy, of Saltus Senior School; Nadia Aguiar, of Mount Saint Agnes School; and Tina Smith, of St. David's Primary School. An honourable mention went to Joy Barnum of Bermuda Institute.

(14-16 yrs.) -- Paul Franco and Tiffany Gosling, of Warwick Academy and Christopher Smith, of Saltus Senior School.
