Bearcats and St.George's set for final showdown
Paget Bearcats and St. George's Internationals will do battle at the Mount Saint Agnes Gymnasium tonight in the inaugural CellularOne Premier Basketball League final.
Regular season division leaders, the Bearcats, boast an eight wins and one defeat record, while St. George's finished only one game behind their opponents with seven wins and two losses.
The showpiece tips off at 8:30p.m.
The Bearcats are led by inspirational player/coach Chris Crumpler who is a member of the national team, and head coach for CedarBridge Academy.
Crumpler believes his team's strengths will be in 6'6" power forward Aaron Jackson.
"Aaron has just completed his freshman season where he played basketball for Lakehead University in Canada, and has been a great asset to the team", said Crumpler.
"Players such as Charles Butterfield, Quincy Trott, Tejour Riley, and Anthony Furbert have all brought a different element to the team that has been crucial to our success this season.
"Our aggressive style on offence and defence is what helped us get to the finals and we look to continue that going forward.
"St. George's are a big team, and they have great players in the likes of Damon Saunders and Dean Jones.
"Both are national team players, along with Charjuan Knight who is arguably the best centre on the Island.
"On Saturday night we are going to look to push the ball and attack to keep pressure on them the entire game."
Starters Dale Butler, Alex Butterfield, and Jeff Manning have all been ruled out for the Bearcats. St. George's are hoping to win their third championship in a row.
Player/coach Pushkin Douglas said the Internationals are a well-rounded team with a strong frontcourt and an equally talented backcourt.
"Charjuan Knight and Dean Jones provide great offence and excellent defence in the low post", he said.
"Their presence deters most teams from venturing into the paint.
"Alan Saunders and Johnny Lugo keep defences on their toes with slashing, cutting and three pointers.
"With these two it helps complete a balanced attack with superior ball movement and stiff defence."
League administrator Kenny Simmons is thrilled with the outcome of the new league.
"The CellularOne league has exceeded our expectations as far as competitiveness and sportsmanship," said Simmons.
"We have been able to accomplish our objective in putting basketball in the minds of people.
"Each team has created their own respective fan base. We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation to all fans that have shown their support throughout our season.
"We would encourage all to come out and support what's going to be an exciting final between two great teams."
The TBI Women's Basketball League will kick-start tonight's action with two games.
The first match starts at 6 p.m. with the Hamilton Parish Hurricanes playing the Somerset Hornets.
At 7 p.m. Warwick Suns take on the St. George's Storm.
