Unprecedented result for sailors

Bermuda's junior sailors achieved an unprecedented finish at the North American Optimist Championships.

The Island concluded the event in Mexico with three sailors in the top five positions and Sean Bouchard taking the overall title.

The results come on top of Bermuda retaining the team title they won on home surf last year.

Bouchard won Saturday's 12th and final race to emerge six points clear of team-mate and defending champion Jesse Kirkland at the head of the standings.

Kirkland had two firsts and a fifth in his last three races to finish on 50 points.

Armando Nicolas Zulian of Argentina in third was the filling in a Bermuda sandwich with Elijah Simmons taking fourth place with 64 points.

Meanwhile, fellow Islander William Hutchings was 25th with 162 points, Oliver Rihiluoma 39th on 198, Cameron Pimentel 41st on 207, Eleanor Gardner 66th with 274 and Peter Miller 76th on 297. Hayley Powell came in 102nd with 410 points and Ryan Saraiva 103rd on 412.
