Woolridge tops Queen's Birthday Honours list
Bermudians in the Queen's Birthday Honours list yesterday.
He was appointed a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.).
Three men were appointed Officers of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.).
They included ex-Government Senate leader the Hon. Charles Collis, The Royal Gazette Editor Mr. David L. White, and former Bermuda Regiment Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Allan Rance.
A woman civil servant, meanwhile, became a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.).
Mrs. Veronica Lana Hines has been Administrative Assistant to Premier the Hon.
Sir John Swan since June 1982.
Six people were awarded the Queen's Certificate and Badge of Honour.
Among them were art history lecturer Mrs. Maurine Cooper, Bermuda's grand patriarch of karate Mr. Frederick "Skipper'' Ingham, and Portuguese community helper Miss Elsie P. Martin.
The others were music teacher and director Mrs. Marjorie Pettit, Dandy Town Football Club's founding member Mr. Elroy Ratteray, and the first black Bermudian nurse to find work at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, Mrs.
Barbara "Lovie'' Wade.
The Colonial Police Medal (C.P.M.) was awarded to Supt. Campbell Simons and Chief Inspector Jeff Sanders.
Mr. Woolridge's honour follows a lengthy career in politics.
Although he has held two major portfolios, he is most closely identified with his work in tourism.
He was first appointed Tourism Minister in August 1977.
Mr. Woolridge was elected to the House of Assembly in 1968 as an MP for Smith's South.
In 1971, after a stint as deputy chairman of the Tourism Board and Government whip, Mr. Woolridge became Labour and Immigration Minister.
Educated in Bermuda, he pursued further education overseas at the New York School of Dental Technology where he qualified as a dental technician.
He later joined the Bermuda Broadcasting Company and rose to sales manager.
In 1982, he was appointed vice-president of the Bermuda Mechanical Company.
Mr. Woolridge, a father-of-two, is also well known as "The Voice of Summer'' for his cricket commentaries.
Mr. Collis has served the community as a senior partner in law firm Conyers, Dill and Pearman, and a member of the Senate.
A Rhodes scholar and Oxford graduate, Mr. Collis qualified as a barrister in 1956, becoming a Queen's Counsel on April 10, 1992.
He was appointed to the Senate in 1982 as Government leader, resigning in 1992.
While in Government, Mr. Collis was Minister without Portfolio, and also became Minister of Legislative Affairs and Minister of Telecommunications.
The father-of-three has been on a number of Government boards, including the Bermuda Monetary Authority, the Treatment of Offenders Board and the Development Applications Board.
From 1980 to 1982 he was president of the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. White became Editor of The Royal Gazette on July 1, 1976.
He began his newspaper career at the age of 16 as a summer student on the paper.
Born in 1933, Mr. White was educated in Bermuda and later at Bard College in New York where he received the highest academic award as John Bard Scholar and graduated with a B.A. in History and Political Science in 1956.
In 1967, Mr. White was a Sir Harry Brittain Commonwealth Press Union Fellow, and later that year became Assistant Editor of the then daily Mid-Ocean News.
He was appointed its Editor when it became a weekly paper in 1968, and in 1973 moved into the post of Assistant Editor of The Royal Gazette .
Mr. White is also Editor-in-Chief of the RG Magazine and of the business magazine The Bottom Line .
And he is president of the Bermuda Creamery Ltd., and has been a member of the old Smith's Parish Vestry.
In addition, the father-of-one was a leading theatrical director and actor, and vice-president of the Bermuda Musical and Dramatic Society.
He assumed the presidency of the Bermuda National Trust in May 1993.
Born in 1949, Col. Rance was educated at Saltus and the University of Toronto, graduating with a degree in engineering in 1971 and qualifying as a teacher.
Col. Rance started his civilian career as a science teacher at Warwick Academy in 1972, and became managing director of Watlington Waterworks in 1984.
He began his service in the Bermuda Regiment as a conscripted recruit in January 1976.
Promotions to Captain and Major followed in 1981 and 1985, and on November 2 1990 he became Commanding Officer.
Col. Rance has also undertaken specialist projects, notably a feasability study on creating a full-time Regiment Band.
Mrs. Hines began her Civil Service career when she was appointed a clerk in January 1974.
In May 1977, she was appointed to Private Secretary to the Premier and to the Secretary to the Cabinet.
She has the distinction of serving four Premiers -- the Hon. Sir Edward Richards, the Hon. Sir John Sharpe, the Hon. Sir David Gibbons, and the Hon.
Sir John Swan.
A mother-of-one, Mrs. Hines is also a founding member of the Bermuda Netball Association.
Mrs. Cooper -- well-known in the local art world -- has taught art history and the visual arts, giving a number of lectures in these two fields annually.
She has taught art at Warwick Academy and to adults in the Queen's University Extension Programme.
Mrs. Cooper, who has been on the governing body of The Bermuda Society of Arts, owned and operated the Mermaid Gallery for several years.
Mr. Ingham, a former merchant seaman, has had a lifelong association with karate.
In 1970, he set up the Bermuda Karate Institute and two years later promoted the Island's first karate tournament.
A year later he organised the first Bermuda Federation aimed at international competition.
In 1983, Mr. Ingham promoted the first Bermuda Open Karate Championships.
Miss Martin retired in January last year after 35 years of service to The Bank of Bermuda, where she became assistant manager.
A devout Roman Catholic, the Azores-born Miss Martin has served her church in several capacities.
She has been treasurer for the Portuguese Association and the Portuguese National Day Committee.
Mrs. Pettit, a graduate of The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, has directed such works as The Mikado, one of the presentations during the 1992 Bermuda Festival.
She has collaborated with musical organisations like the Gilbert and Sullivan Society under whose aegis she presented Mozart's Requiem and the Clarinet Concerto in honour of the composer's 200th birthday.
Mrs. Pettit is a former music teacher at Government and private primary schools. She now teaches at her own music studio.
Mr. Ratteray has been involved in such sports as softball, cricket and soccer.
He was instrumental in negotiating with Government to obtain a field and clubhouse for the Western Stars Sports Club, of which he is president.
Since 1968 Mr. Ratteray has been an executive committee member of the Bermuda Football Association, serving as treasurer and director, and he is also chairman of the Cycles and Private Cars Committee of the Transport Control Department. For a few years he was on the Small Business Development Corporation.
Mrs. Wade qualified as a nurse in the United Kingdom in 1958. After just under a year at King Edward, she transferred to the Health Department, spending some 15 years as a school nurse.
In 1971, she became supervisor at the Government Day Care Centre on Happy Valley Road, Pembroke, retiring in June 1991.
Mrs. Wade, a former "Nurse of the Year'', was regional director of the Caribbean Nurses Organisation, and is a founding member of The Bermuda Association for the Education of Young Children.
Supt. Simons, who played cricket and soccer on a national level, joined the Bermuda Police Service as a cadet in 1960, and became a constable in 1963.
He has worked mainly in uniform and narcotics sections, with a brief period in CID.
Chief Insp. Sanders was formerly the second longest serving officer in the Bermuda Police Service, from which he retired in 1993.
He became Chief Inspector in 1984, and oversaw the day-to-day Police policy issues on behalf of the Commissioner, and was also responsible for all civilian staff.
