Port Royal the boat to beat
CORRECTION Man of the match in last weekend's Junior Eastern Counties cricket final, in which St. David's beat Bailey's Bay by 100 runs, was Tyler Fox and not Tim Fox as reported in Wednesday's Royal Gazette. Fox returned figures of four for eitht in three overs.
Port Royal remains the boat to beat as the fitted dinghy season draws to a close but the real fight is for second place between Elizabeth and Contest , who are separated by just a few points.
Port Royal , skippered by William White, won Sunday's first race in the blustery and shifty conditions of St George's Harbour after Paula Lewin's Challenger , plagued by breakdowns this year, snapped her jib halyard after establishing a comfortable lead and had to retire for the day.
But White's boat sustained the worst damage in the third race when its rig exploded into tiny pieces under the strain of heavy air in what appears to have been a backstay failure. Malcolm Smith, fresh from his silver medal success at the Pan-Am Games, went on to steer his craft Elizabeth across the line first.
Smith has also won the right to represent the RHADC in the annual Jubilee Cup race against Victory , beating Port Royal in a best of three series the previous week.
Victory , who has begun to find her way late in the season was a convincing winner in race two under the stewardship of David Hillier.
