Smith looking for a strong finish in Quebec

Learning experience: Smith

Tyler Smith is looking to add another strong finish to his overseas campaign this summer as he takes on the Canadian Junior Elite Championships in Magog, Quebec this weekend.

Smith has spent his summer training at an elite facility in Victoria, Spain under coach Kelly Guest as he prepares to compete in the World Junior Elite 16-19 Triathlon World Championships in Chicago this September.

His improvement was evident as he nabbed a tenth place finish at the European Triathlon Union’s Junior Elite Series race in Chateauroux, France last week against some of Europe’s top junior triathletes.

“The training here has been fantastic. The ability to train with a squad of juniors competing at a similar level, as well as some of the worlds elite, gives a high intensity level to the training environment, which I am taking advantage of,” said Smith, who turns 17 this summer.

“My coach here, Kelly Guest, is helping me improve on all aspects of racing but I am trying to focus more on my run, as that is where I am weakest right now.

“Learning how to live as an athlete has also been a beneficial experience.”
