Opportunity knocks for keeper Hall
Freddy Hall is hoping for an extended stint between the sticks for Northampton Town as he looks to build on his encouraging debut for the League Two side. The Bermuda goalkeeper should retain the number one jersey against Southend tomorrow, having delivered a solid display in his side’s win over Morecambe last weekend.Having been the next cab in the rank since signing for the Cobbers in the summer, Hall was handed his chance after Shane Higgs, a recent signing by new boss Aidy Boothroyd, suffered a long-term achilles injury.Hall insisted he would be doing his utmost to take his grab his opportunity with both hands.“It’s just great to be playing,” Hall told BBC Radio Northampton. “I was standing by and the opportunity came about with Shane being injured.“I was thankful we got the win and hopefully we can drive on from this now and keep winning.“Given the opportunity here I hope to keep on improving and help this team the best I can.”Boothroyd was full of praise for Hall following his impressive showing against struggling Morecambe. It is not yet clear, though, whether the former Watford boss will look to move for a new first-choice keeper to replace Higgs or stand by untested Hall.“Freddy came in and for his first game he was brilliant. I like a lot of things about him, Tim Flowers likes a lot about him, he always has a smile on his face and he’s the type of player we want around the club,” said Boothroyd.“I’m going to give it some thought because at some point or another a number two goalkeeper has to step up to be a number one or there’s no point having them.“I’ll give it a bit of thought and decide what we’re going to do. We are going to need another keeper because Paul Walker isn’t quite ready yet.”Hall signed a one-year contract after impressing Town’s coaches in pre-season training.A regular for Bermuda in their World Cup qualifiers late last year, Hall was mentored and coached by Shaka Hislop at Quinnipiac University, in the US, and is a former Plymouth Argyle trialist. He finished his career at Quinnipiac as a three-time All-NEC honoree and earned First-Team honours in 2009.The ex-St George’s man was also awarded with the 2009 adidas National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-North Atlantic Regional Second Team in 2009, after leading all of Division One with 121 saves, posting the third best save percentage in the nation.Despite winning their first match in more than three months, and their first in Boothroyd’s six games in charge, Northampton still lie second-bottom of League Two.
