Rugby chiefs set to seal deal with Montessori

Rugby is set to secure its long term future in Bermuda following talks between the sport's officials and Montessori Academy.

The Island's Rugby Football Union had secured a one-year deal to play at the former National Sports Club in Devonshire, following the acquisition of the site by the educational body last year.

However, it remained to be seen whether that deal would be extended as doubts over the compatibility of the two had been aired.

But John Williams, president of the BRFU, said talks were reaching the final stages and the outcome looked promising.

"Everything appears to be running smoothly between the Rugby Union and Montessori," said Williams. "Negotiations are underway for a longer contract than the yearly one we currently have."

Addressing the current arrangement, Williams went on: "It was on a trial basis to see whether we fitted into their plans and they fitted into ours.

"It appears that we are reaching a pleasant state of affairs and compatibility. We are existing together quite well and, to date, any minor problems have been sorted out."

Williams said the discussions also included possible upgrades to the site.

"Everything would be mutually beneficial," said Williams, who added any improvements would require input from rugby.

"It is very delicate right now and we are not quite sure exactly where we are but we are working together and it looks as though we will be in harmony for the forseeable future."

Had the talks not gone smoothly then rugby would have been forced to seek a new home, something that would not have sat comfortably with the BRFU.

"There are no really viable alternatives and it (Nationals) has been the home of rugby since 1955, since we moved from Boaz Island Field in Somerset," said Williams. "It's a central location and we have ironed out whatever had to be ironed out and we appear to be co-existing."
