Teenager Siese sets sights on podium finish

Bermuda sailor Owen Siese is quietly confident he can achieve a medal finish at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

Siese, 15, left for Southeast Asia on Sunday where he will be one of four Bermudians competing at the Games which run from August 14 until 26.

The other athletes hoping to make their mark in Singapore are sprinter Jeneko Place, middle distance runner Taylor Ashley-Bean and triathlete Ryan Gunn.

Siese, who will sail in the Byte Class, is familiar with most of the North and South American sailors heading to the Games and, should the condition favour his slight frame, then he believes he is capable of outfoxing many of them.

"I hope to do well, it's possible I can medal and I hope to, but I won't be disappointed if I don't," said Siese, who sails out of Sandys Boat Club.

"I know most of the guys I'll be sailing against from competing in the North American and South American Optimists.

"A lot of them moved on from the Optimists to the Byte Class so they could compete at the Youth Olympics.

"When I was at the World Youth Championships in March the conditions in France were similar to what's expected in Singapore.

"I sailed in second place for most of that regatta until the final day when it got really windy and I dropped back as some of the other kids were a lot bigger than me.

"Hopefully it will be lighter in Singapore and then I will be able to do well."

Siese was selected for the Games on the back of his performance at trials held in the Byte Class in Bermuda last month.

He plans to graduate to the Laser 420 Class after the Youth Olympics.

"(The trials) could have gone either way, I was hoping it was going to be me and I had a good chance because I won the national championships with seven firsts out of eight races.

"I'm not really doing anything different from before, I was training hard before as I was hoping to get selected.

"Now it's the summer holidays I'm able to sail everyday."

In Singapore, Place will take part in the boys 200 metres, Ashley-Bean, also 16, will run the 1000m and Ryan Gunn, 17, will compete in the boys Triathlon.

The Island's representatives will be among some 5000 athletes and officials from 205 National Olympic Committees.

The Youth Olympic Games, which will be held every four years, provide qualifying young athletes, aged 14 to 18 years, with the opportunity to compete for their countries at the top level.

It will also give young Olympians with the opportunity to participate in a variety of cultural social and educational activities during their time in Singapore.
