Keeping a local institution alive
The National Trust has leased a historic St. George's mansion to the new owners of a historic Bermuda company.
The Bermuda Perfumery and Gardens were located at Bailey's Bay from 1929 until last fall when the gardens were sold to a real estate developer and The Perfumery was sold to the Brackstone Partnership.
Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone, co-owner and managing director of the company is currently operating the business out of a temporary location in St. David's. In the middle of next month however she will move into Stewart Hall on Queen Street in St. George's.
"We are excited about moving into Steward Hall. It is a beautiful building in a lovely historic setting and I believe it is a perfect match as the new location for The Bermuda Perfumery," Mrs. Ramsay-Brackstone said.
Stewart Hall is one of the largest of the old town's 18th century houses. For many years it was the home of the East End branch of the Bermuda Library, but more recently it was used for and architect's offices.
Besides opening a store at the location, the company plans to invite the public into the space to show them how perfume is manufactured using traditional methods and techniques.
The garden at Stewart Hall will be planted with the flowers that inspired the company's Lili fragrance line.
The Perfumery co-owner Kirby Brackstone said: "It will be another attraction for visitors to St. George's where they will get to see how perfume is made and also visit a great example of early Bermuda architecture."
The property manager for the Bermuda National Trust, Valerie Wallace said: "The new use will compliment the Trust's role in promoting historic buildings in the World Heritage Site."
