Trial date fixed over alleged $1.24m theft from bowling league funds
A woman accused of stealing more than $1.24 million from bowling league funds will go on trial on March 26.
Jean Marion Burgess pleaded not guilty yesterday at Supreme Court to ten counts related to the alleged fraud.
The 54-year-old, from Loyal Hill, Devonshire, is said to have stolen money from the Bermuda Bowling Federation between April and November 2003, from the Junior Bowling League between September and October of that year, and the Commercial Bowling League between May 2002 and October 2003.
All of the offences are alleged to have been committed while she was clerk to the organisations. In addition to theft, she is also accused of forging 170 cheques and uttering them as false documents. Burgess had her bail extended until her trial by Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves.
In other cases heard by Mr Justice Greaves during the monthly arraignments session, a trial date of February 12 was set in the case of a St. George?s man accused of seriously sexually assaulting a woman while armed with a knife, and depriving her of her liberty.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is also accused of stealing from the woman while armed with a knife during an aggravated burglary, and robbing her of $1,060 while armed
In a separate case, a Pembroke man ? who also cannot be named ? pleaded not guilty to sexual exploitation of a young girl while he was in a position of trust. He was granted $10,000 bail with one surety, and the case will be mentioned again at court on March 1.
In another case, Clyde Ian Saltus, 31, pleaded guilty to obtaining $25,300 cash by false pretences from Bank of Bermuda. He admitted four counts in total spanning August and September 2004. Mr Justice Greaves ordered a pre-sentence report, and ordered Saltus to appear before him again on March 1.
And Muhammad Nasir, 40, of Fritholme Gardens, Paget, will go on trial on April 2 for the alleged wounding of Dave Tucker with intent to cause grievous bodily harm on September 5 2006. He is on bail.
