Fray challenged for BCB presidency

Lloyd Smith, a former club representative on the Bermuda Cricket Board, is to challenge incumbent Lloyd Fray for the BCB’s presidency at tonight’s annual general meeting.

It is unclear whether there will be other challengers for the post, which Fray won by a landslide in 2011.

Nomination forms went out to the clubs recently and had to be returned by last Wednesday.

“I only made the decision [to run] on the day,” said Smith, who was president of Devonshire Recreation Club for two years. “I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t think I can [make a difference]. I’m not going to do it just to do it.”

Smith had a meeting with club presidents and representatives on Monday evening at Devonshire Recreation Club to drum up support for his challenge.

“I’ve been on the board for four years and was a club representative before I came off, I have always been involved in cricket,” Smith said.

“If I get elected tomorrow night I won’t have any problem sitting down with anybody and talking but right now I don’t want to go into [my plans]. I had a meeting on Monday night with the presidents and reps and it was a good turnout.”

Fray had an emphatic win three years ago over rivals Ed Bailey, a former long-serving president of the Bermuda Cricket Board of Control, and Clay Smith when he secured ten votes compared to three for Bailey.

They were challenging for the post vacated by Reggie Pearman who did not seek re-election. Smith was returned as a club representative at that AGM.

The BCB has come in for some stark criticism after Bermuda’s relegation to Division Four of the ICC World Cricket League, having performed dismally in Malaysia.

Also up for election tonight at the BCB office on Point Finger Road is the post of treasurer as well as the positions of club representatives.
