Breaking News: Two arrested after 34-year-old man shot dead

Forensic officers collect evidence from the scene of a shooting outside of Woody's Sports Bar on Malabar Road, Sandys in the early hours of Monday morning.

Two people are in Police custody this afternoon in connection with the murder of Frederick Maybury, the 34-year-old gunned down at a Somerset bar earlier today.

The man heading the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro, revealed there were at least ten people at the scene when Mr. Maybury was shot multiple times outside Woody’s.

The victim, a self-employed plumber from Sandys, was rushed to hospital but pronounced dead from his injuries. Police are investigating reports that the culprits may have used a boat to commit the crime.

Officers including personnel from the marine and armed response units attended the scene at 12.35 a.m.

Det. Chf. Insp. Pedro explained: “There’s some indications that the offenders may have had access to a boat. It’s not been confirmed at this point but there’s some indication that a boat was heard in the area at the time.”

He said officers are working on forensic examinations, and perusing CCTV footage from the scene of the slaying, as well as interviewing witnesses who were present. An autopsy is due to be conducted tomorrow.

No further information on the persons in custody was available at the time of the press conference.

Mr. Maybury is the sixth person shot dead in Bermuda so far this year. A further 12 people have been injured.

Det. Chf. Insp. Pedro was joined in addressing the media by Assistant Commissioner of Police Paul Wright. Both officers declined to declined to comment on any possible motive for the slaying, saying it is too early in the inquiry and all avenues of investigation remain open.

Asked if tensions between Bermuda’s warring gangs may be to blame for the murder, Mr. Wright replied: “We’re 15 hours into this (investigation.) We are really not going to start closing down avenues of inquiry. We are keeping an open mind, we are working with witnesses.”

However, asked about the response from those witnesses — since people have proved reluctant to speak to Police in previous gun cases — Det. Chf. Insp. Pedro said: “Certainly we are getting early cooperation from people that were there, and we are not encountering resistance in this inquiry.”

He noted that several people have recently been charged in the local courts in connection with gun crimes, which appears to have boosted the confidence of the public in the Police.

Anyone with information about the murder of Mr. Maybury should call the Serious Crime Unit on 299-8106 or the confidential Crimestoppers hotline on 800 8477.
