Rain washes out Under-19 opener

By Derek deChabertUnited States of America 194 all outBermuda 8 for two(Match abandoned due to rain)Bermuda’s opening game of the ICC Under-19 World Cup qualifiers against the USA at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club in King City, Canada was abandoned due to rain. The Islanders, who take on the hosts in their second 50 over qualifier tomorrow, lost the toss with USA deciding to bat.USA’s danger man Steven Taylor (16) was kept under wraps but it was his opening partner Shakeel Ahmad who caused the damage with 71 and seemed to have set his side up for a large total. That wasn’t to be, however, as seamer Delray Rawlins went about ripping the heart out of USA’s middle order, including the wickets of Ahmad, Patrick Palmer (41), Trevor Ross (10), Randall Wilson (5) and Rishi Patel for a first ball duck.Rawlins finished with five wickets for 51 runs in his ten overs, while Kamau Leverock chipped in with two wickets for 52 runs from 7.4 overs.Onias Bascome, Kamal Easton, and skipper Joshua Gilbert all grabbed a wicket apiece to bowl their rivals out in 44.4 overs. In reply, Bermuda were on the back foot from the beginning of their run chase, losing Christian Burgess (1) with the score on seven, and Tre Manders one run later, caught for a duck.Shaquille Jones was unbeaten on four when play was ultimately halted due to rain, which also delayed the start of the match.Patel and Arsh Buch both claimed a wicket each for USA.The winner of the tournament, which runs until July 14, will compete in the ICC Under-19 World Cup in UAE next February.
