A rockin' Saturday night
Saturday is “dance until you drop” night at the Bermuda Musical & Dramatic Society’s temporary headquarters on Dundonald Street when the Rego-Davis Group will play a mixture of R&B, reggae, rock, blues and Latin music from 9 p.m. to midnight.
The venue is the little cottage next to the Olympic Club formerly occupied by the Bermuda War Veterans Association, and the doors will open at 8 p.m. Admission is $20 and tickets are available from the bar after 5.30 p.m. (( 295-5584).
Cabinet maker Andr? Hubbard will give a talk entitled ‘The Conservation and Care of Fine Furniture in our Difficult Climate’ at the Verdmont Museum on Sunday, September 22 under the auspices of the Bermuda National Trust.
His talk will embrace both the conservation and preservation of fine furniture and objets d’art in the Trust’s museums and historic homes, and by extension private homes, as well as highlighting the do’s and don’ts of caring for such items. Among the hazards to be discussed are extremes of temperature, sunlight and ultraviolet light, and aerosol furniture sprays.
Cabinetmaker Mr. Hubbard is well versed in the conservation and preservation of fine furniture, having spent six years in Britain studying with European craftsmen and restorers. Twelve years ago he established his own, thriving business here. He is passionate about his subject, and serves on the Trust’s Museums Committee.
Tickets for Sunday’s talk ($35) are available in advance from the Trust headquarters at ‘Waterville’ on Pomander Road, Paget (( 236-6483), as well as at the door. The event is from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and includes light refreshments.
The New Zealand comedy, ‘Stickmen’, is the next Bermuda International Film Festival presentation. It will be screened at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute auditorium on September 26 at 7.30 p.m.

Bermudian poet Edward Warren Ming was among this year’s winners at the International of Society of Poets and travelled to Washington, DC to receive his silver bowl and bronze medal. Bermuda was one of 50 countries represented at the event, which was also attended by other Bermudians. His poem, ‘Music of the Heart’, can be found on the website www.poetry.com
Earmark October 5 for Adlev Entertainment Award’s second annual show at the Fairmont Southampton Princess Hotel.
Entitled ‘Memories’, the event promises a full evening of nostalgia featuring local artists, both well-established and up-and-coming, whose performances will be interspersed with the presentation of crystal awards to Edward DeMello, The Bermuda Strollers, Donald (Big Daddy) Gates Galloway, Erma Washington, Wendell (Shine) Hayward, Nell Bassett, Marlene B. Landy, Harry Nixon and the Apex Four.
Dub poet Ras Mykkal will receive the Outstanding Artist award, and Posthumous awards will go to the families of Violeta Carmichael and Michael Clarke. The presentations will be made by Larry Thomas and June Caisey, and the master of ceremonies will be Derrick (CJ) Symonds.
Adlev Entertainment also invites the public to submit for its consideration additional names of people whom they feel may be deserving of these awards.

Recipients of the Adlev Entertainment Award are involved in all phases of entertainment, including artists and those who work behind the scenes, as well as promoters, producers, choreographers, and playwrights.
Entertainers include comedian Bootsie, gospel singer Toni Robinson, and tap dancer Mitchell Trott, while artists Gene Steede, George Smith, Dean Ming, June and Phiemma Caisey and Prinzine Bailey will lead a journey down memory lane with songs from the 1950s through the 1970s.
The band will feature some of Bermuda’s top musicians, including Milt Robinson, Toni Bari, Stan Gilbert, Ronnie Lopes, Winston De Graff, and Mike Perinchief. Distinguished patrons for the black tie evening will be the Minister of Community Affairs and Sport, Randolph Horton, and Mrs. Horton.
“We are looking forward to making this show a first-class production, so that each year even more people will want to come and support the entertainers and the charities,” Mrs. Ming says. “We want to bring back entertainment as it was years ago, when Bermudians and visitors could go out to a night club and enjoy an evening of wonderful music, great singing, dancing and socialising. Our ultimate goal is to make sure that the mature audiences in Bermuda have something to do and somewhere to go. This will be our version of the Grammies, and we think Bermuda is in for a treat.”

Adlev Entertainment Awards is a registered charity, and proceeds from this event will go to the newly-established Hubert Smith Sr. Music Fund to assist a music student with school funding. The late Mr. Smith was a founding member of Adlev Entertainment Awards. A donation will also be made to The King Edward VII Memorial Hospital’s Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) department.
