Two-goal Warren rocks Rangers

A week after scoring on his debut as North Village disposed of Somerset Trojans 1-0, Dwight Warren yesterday added two more goals to send Southampton Rangers tumbling to defeat at Southampton Oval.

But while the maximum points kept Village in third place in the Premier League, coach Kenny Thompson will want his players to work even harder over the entire 90 minutes after a performance in which they weren't always firing on all cylinders.

Tafari Outerbridge was the other scorer for Village with a penalty while Ryan Belboda netted for Rangers.

With Village's attack breaking down during the early stages, Southampton were allowed to take the initiative and Belboda fired them ahead after 16 minutes when he smartly headed home a corner from Craig Darrell.

Despite this setback, Village matched their opponents for a long period when defences dominated. And they slowly found their groove with Neil Robinson powering a shot over from 22 yards after 23 minutes and Outerbridge blowing a chance when he put Sergio Goater's cross wide from only 12 yards.

With his side clearly lacking thrust and sometimes imagination, centre back Kentoine Jennings often advanced deep into Southampton's half with telling runs.

And the equalising goal came during an attack down the right flank when Goater chipped the ball into the middle for the unmarked Warren to hammer home from close range.

Village made their intentions known early in the second half when Kentoine Jennings blasted a shot over from 22 yards after just 30 seconds.

Elliott Jennings then gave the home side another scare after 52 minutes when he slammed a shot just inches over.

Warren double sparks Village From Page 33 Randy Darrell was kept busy in the Southampton goal and after 57 minutes had to show his agility by diving to push a blast from Outerbridge outside for a corner.

It was only a matter of time before the Southampton defence would fold from this pummelling and the breakthrough came via the penalty spot after 61 minutes when left full-back Eugene Pitt was penalised for fouling Warren.

It was Outerbridge who made no mistake from the spot.

Kevin Jennings should have made it 3-1 after 67 minutes but he miskicked a cross from Warren while Marlie Dill put a ball over from 20 yards five minutes later.

Warren then came up with the most exciting effort of the game, sensationally scoring with an overhead kick from 12 yards out after Elliot and Kevin Jennings had combined.

Southampton had the misfortune of seeing Village centre-back Arthur Simons clear Sheridan Ming's shot off the goal-line after 85 minutes, but by then Village were well in charge.

St.David's 0 Somerset 3 Just a week after earning their first league point, St. David's were decisively beaten by Somerset at Lord's yesterday.

The Trojans got a break in the first half when Otis Minors scored in his own net, heading a corner kick home from close range after 16 minutes.

That proved to be the only goal of a hard fought first half that saw both teams struggle under the slippery, windy conditions.

St. David's had missed an easy chance early in the game when Kanhai Fray sent his shot straight at goalkeeper Keenan Tucker.

After the interval it was Somerset who took control and they increased their lead to 2-0 after 63 minutes when Rodney Bascome scored, firing home as a shot rebounded off goalkeeper Sidney Minors.

Minors again failed to smother a shot after 83 minutes and young Nasir Wade was in position to hammer the ball home from close range to finish off the scoring.
