UBP: Govt. Senators have too much power

Opposition leader Wayne Furbert has attacked last week's Cabinet reshuffle for putting so much power in the hands of unelected parliamentarians.

Following the resignation of Tourism and Transport Minister Ewart Brown the Tourism portfolio was given to Senator David Burch who already holds Works and Engineering and Housing.

Meanwhile Senator Larry Mussenden holds the Attorney General's post from the appointed Upper Chamber.

The Transport brief was given to Walter Lister who sits in the House of Assembly during last week's musical chairs caused after Dr. Brown announced he would be challenging Premier Alex Scott for the Progressive Labour Party leadership.

Mr. Furbert told : "My major concern is there are too many major ministries heading towards the Senate ? most of it should be debated in the House.

"Tourism should be up there in the House but from what we are hearing it could just be temporary. We shall see what happens after the election."

One PLP MP who spoke to said: "I think it is temporary. Mr. Scott could not make any major changes with two weeks to go."

The reshuffle has caused some slight changes for the civil service with the Transport brief moving from Permanent Secretary Marc Telemaque to Derrick Binns.
