'You just have to duck for cover'
A gunman on a bike sped through Tribe Road No. 5 pelting shots at unsuspecting men Tuesday afternoon as they all ran for cover.
But 19-year-old Damien Morris of Paget was the only one hit. He was taken to hospital for a wound to the leg moments after the shooting.
The Royal Gazette understands the rider came from the South Shore entrance of Tribe Road No. 5 where only bikes have access.
He then fired two shots and sped out of the alley to Ord Road.
The shooting marks the 14th firearm incident in 2009.
Yesterday, the road did not look like a crime scene. There was no visible Police presence and only a short piece of caution tape on a fence.
One resident said undercover officers were in the area earlier in the day to take witness statements.
Eyewitnesses said even though the murder of 18-year-old Jason Lightbourne happened in the area, they were surprised that someone would ride through shooting in the day.
Asked what kind of bike it was, one man said: "When you hear shots, you don't have time to check the licence plate. You just have to duck for cover."
Another man said he blamed older gang members for leading the younger ones in the wrong direction.
He said the youngsters don't even know why they are fighting or who they are fighting.
He claimed the younger members were raised "decent" but are being lead down the wrong path because they look up to the older members.
The incident happened near the junction of Ord Road and Tribe Road No. 5 in Paget, shortly after 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
An area resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said she was inside her home when her daughter told her she had heard four gun shots. Soon after the woman heard several bikes leaving the area and Police sirens.
Police arrived at the scene at 3.20 p.m. and cordoned off 200 yards of the street while they scoured the area for bullet casings and evidence.
A vehicle, believed to have been damaged by bullets, was hauled away. There was also a heavy Police presence on Granaway Lane in Southampton where a motorcycle, believed to have been used in the incident, was seized.
Mr. Morris was released from the hospital Tuesday night after receiving treatment for the gunshot wound.
