Outstanding scholars claim their reward
Eight Bermudian students received Government scholarships worth $10,000 apiece at the Department of Education this week.
Education Minister the Hon. Dr. Clarence Terceira, who announced the names of the winners, congratulated them on their achievements and said he looked forward to their continued success.
Dr. Terceira said he felt the scholarships were a milestone in the students' careers and said he hoped they would provide an incentive to the recipients to come back and play their part in the community.
"It shows schools in Bermuda can produce students of this calibre,'' he added.
The Government Scholars for the 1995/96 academic year are as follows: Miss Janita Burke who is studying Law at the University of Warwick, Coventry, United Kingdom; Miss Kelmia Butterfield who will study Actuarial Science at the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada; Mr. Miguel DaPonte who will study Finance and Economics at the University of Western Ontario; Mr. An Chi Ly who is studying Economics at Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, Michigan, United States; Mr. Mark Melo who will study Business Administration at Acadia University, Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada; Miss Marisha Newton who is studying Chemistry at Howard University, Washington D.C., United States; Miss Andrea Simons who will study Commerce at St. Mary's University, Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Miss Cara-Louise Wallington who is studying Chemistry at Eastern Nazarene College, Quincy, Massachusetts, United States.
