Law students set new aims
committee and the new members are aiming to take it in a new direction.
The committee was elected into office on August 11 and has wasted no time thinking of new ways to improve and broaden the focus of the association.
New members include Cindy Clarke as president, Crystal Todd as vice president, Janita Burke as treasurer, Sasha Castle as secretary, Allan Doughty as member, and Koshea Scott as editor.
The Royal Gazette this week spoke to Cindy Clarke and Koshea Scott about the plans they had for the Law Student's Association.
Ms Clarke, 22, a clerk at Conyers, Dill and Pearman, said the group already had several events scheduled for next year designed to allow law students and lawyers to become more familiar with each other.
She said one of the Association's goals will be to raise its profile in the community. And she said the focus of the group will change from being a source for students already in law school to becoming a branch to younger students who were interested in law and wanted to know more about the profession.
Ms Clarke pointed out that the Association's goal has always been to represent the interest of law students in Bermuda and abroad. But she said it will be looking to become involved in the school system to help students find the best programmes and branch out into the international community.
Ms Clarke, who studied law at University of Kent in London, said she was the president of The Law Student Association there and that made her see that the local Association could be.
For example, she said, the Association could help students when they were applying to law schools. For her, she added, this was a long and tedious process.
Ms Scott, 22, agreed, saying her role as editor excited her because she wanted to put her energy into making it better and giving it "a magazine type feel''.
Ms Scott's first degree was in journalism. She said writing was one of her passions and law was the other so the newsletter was going to be a labour of love for her.
The Association provided an opportunity to liaise with lawyers and other law students,'' she added.
LAW AND ORDER -- Members of The Bermuda Law Student Association's newly-appointed executive committee are, from left, Koshea Scott, Cindy Clarke, Janika Burke, and Sasha Castle. Missing are Crystal Todd and Allan Doughty. The new comittee plans to improve links with law firms and with students who are considering legal careers.
