Kilmarlic claim lead after sizzling 54

Kilmarlic Golf Club from North Carolina made the most of ideal conditions to fire an impressive net 54 at Belmont Hills yesterday and snatch the overall lead in the 52nd annual Goodwill Championships which got underway on Sunday.

For the first time in the event?s long history, teams are this year playing a gruelling 90 holes over five days on five different courses ? Belmont Hills, Riddell?s Bay, Mid Ocean Club, Port Royal and Tucker?s Point ? with all of those local clubs also among the field.

Yesterday?s action saw Kilmarlic, led by PGA Tour player Bryan Sullivan, move to 27-under-par after just 36 holes to take the net top spot from overnight leaders Tucker?s Point.

Sullivan is joined by amateurs Cameron McPhail, Tony Mitchum and Russ Kirk.

Tucker?s Point, led by pro Kevin Benevides and including Garry Carr, Danny Fagundo and Paul Booth, fell back to third even though they returned an impressive nine-under 62 at Port Royal, leaving them with a 23-under total.

Last year?s net champions, Montgomery CC, jumped 18 spots to move into second place and in prime position to defend their title after a blazing 54 at Belmont Hills.

Montgomery are captained by professional Frank Ferguson and include amateurs Al Hedlund, Harry Leavy and Al Fienberg.

In the gross division, Kilmaric hold a healthy five-shot lead over the local players from Mid Ocean Club as well as Bethesda CC and Orange Park CC.

Kilmaric?s gross score at Belmont was 57 while Mid Ocean, led by pro Chris Marshall along with Jonathan Ingham, Blake Marshall and Eddie Marshall turned in an impressive 63 at Tucker?s Point.

Bethesda, captained by Jim Folks and including Matt Sughrue, Don Tamasso and Dick Toomey, returned 63 at Port Royal, leaving them level with Orange Park, whose pro is Champions Tour player Bob Duvall, the father of PGA star David Duvall.

In the senior gross division, long-time return visitor and first day joint leader in last week?s Gosling?s Invitational, Joe Carr, helped his Bedrock, Massachusetts team into the lead at six-under.

Also on the team are Charlie Carr, Bill Carr and St. George?s GC manager Max Atherden.

Runners-up in the senior gross division last year, Lambton GC from Canada, are in second place again but in in contention for the title after posting a 69 at Belmont Hills to move onto five-under.

Their team includes pro Dudley Jones and amateurs Jack Dudley, Michael Millman and Ross Schofield.

In the senior net division, last year?s runners-up Greenwich CC A at 18-under hold a slim one-shot lead over Lambton G&CC.

As part of this year?s tournament all of the professionals are also competing in a stableford tournament and not surprisingly it?s Kilmaric?s Sullivan who?s setting the early pace.

Sullivan was was six-under on his own ball yesterday to add 24 points to the 23 he made on the opening day.

He leads by four over Paul Oglesby of Merion CC who has 44 points.

Bob Duvall heads the senior pros by four shots over Ed Whalley of Meadow Brook. Duvall shot an excellent 65 at Riddell?s Bay yesterday.
