Devonshire Colts' young team seized the lead in the First Division standings yesterday with this emphatic victory at Police Field as previous leaders Island Rangers were soundly beaten by Wolves at Malabar.

While Rangers stumbled, there were no slip-ups from a determined Colts side.

Competition was stiff in the first half with Colts only managing to hold a 1-0 edge by the interval, the goal coming from Jason Dill after 38 minutes.

Colts, though, should have put the result out of reach early in the second half but missed chances by Ryan Evans and Zuri Darrell led to frustration.

Adding to their woes also was some fine goalkeeping by veteran Kuhn Evans in the Prospect goal.

The visitors finally took a 2-0 lead through Darrell after 68 minutes and the college student and former Bermuda Under-17 player grabbed his second and the team's third after 75 minutes.

Right at the end Jeron Trott netted the fourth, all three second-half goals coming from good build-up play involving midfielders Shannon Burgess and Jason Dill with wingers Ryan Pernell and Willis Ming also making valuable contributions.

Island Rangers 1 Wolves 3

There were no New Year gifts for Rangers who entered the day in first place and and ended up in second after this surprise setback - crushed by a Wolves team hovering near the bottom half of the table.

Vince Minors did the damage to the West Enders, scoring twice, while veteran Kenny Hill got the third. Shawn Brangman netted for Rangers.

Minors netted the first goal after 16 minutes after Rangers ‘keeper Ricardo Tucker decided to punch the ball clear instead of collecting it. He paid the price when Tucker sent his clearance straight past him and into the net.

Hill got the second after 24 minutes when he intercepted a back pass to the goalkeeper and Minors made it 3-0 after 47 minutes when he netted a penalty after being fouled by Wendell Anderson.

Brangman scored Rangers' consolation after 58 minutes after Trevor Corday's 25-yard blast struck the crossbar and rebounded for the incoming Brangman to smartly head home from close range.

St. George's 0 X Roads 0

St. George's suffered the embarrassment of being unable to take maximum points from the division's last-placed team in order to remain in the thick of the promotion race.

Going into the day in fourth place, St. George's had Detroy Smith sent off for a second bookable offence after 58 minutes and then had to hold on for a share of the points.

St. George's could have wrapped it up near the end but Orande Bascome was blown for a foul as he prepared to shoot.

St. David's 4 Social Club 0

St. David's kept pace with the front runners with this comfortable victory at Lord's, scoring three goals in the first half and one in the second.

O.J.Minors, Dejuan Paynter and Figre Crockwell netted for the Islanders in the opening half while Lando Minors got the fourth in the second.

It's understood that referee Anthony Francis ended the game a few minutes early after a skirmish broke out behind a team bench, but no further information about the incident could be obtained at press time.

The game between Hamilton Parish and Paget was not played because of a mix-up over the starting time. Parish believed the game was due to start at 1 p.m. instead of 12.30 p.m. and rrived at the field late.
