Cheng ousts top seed in semi-final
Unseeded Deborah Cheng pulled off the first upset of the Coral Beach Club Invitational tennis tournament yesterday when she stunned women's top seed Donna Bradshaw in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Cheng will take on second seed Kelly Holland in today's final after Holland stopped Debby Kelly 6-3, 6-0. In that match Holland trailed 3-1 during the early going before running off 11 straight games for the victory.
Meanwhile, the men's one and two seeds, Michael Way and Michael Beautyman, moved into today's open final following straight set victories in yesterday's semi-finals.
Way breezed past Wilfred Gonsalves 6-0, 6-0, while Beautyman had to pull out all stops in the second set to defeat Eldon Daniels 6-0, 7-5. This was after Daniels had advanced with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over B.Achtmeyer while Beautyman ousted G. Hogarth 6-2, 6-3.
Nanny Vanneck and Ted Hoehn closed out the 69th edition of the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Club Invitational championships on Saturday when they clinched the Century Mixed Doubles crown with a hard fought 6-3, 6-4 victory over Maureen O'Berg and Ron Groff in an all-American affair at the Coral Beach Tennis Club in the final match of the day.
It was the second title for Vanneck, who earlier had teamed with Faith Bascome to come from a set down to win the Ladies 55 doubles crown, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in a mild upset over the favoured top-seeded local pair of Pat Siddle and Gill Butterfield.
Scott Estes and Craig Brand also came away with two titles during the week-long tournament. Brand captured the men's consolation final with a victory over Jim Thompson, as well as the doubles after teaming with Bill Cook to beat Bill Lusher and Ian Strecker 7-6, 0-6, 6-4.
Estes, a past winner in the CBC annual Father/Son tournament, won the men's 55 crown with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Ron Groff, then returned to team with Dennis Cross to take the Men's Doubles 55 title by defeating Bob Brown and Walter Milbourne 6-2, 6-3.
