Exhibit tells the history of Bermuda?s monetary notes

Minister of Finance Paula Cox opened a Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA) sponsored exhibit last week at Commissioner?s House which tells the history of monetary notes in Bermuda.

The Minister unveiled the new show at a reception hosted jointly by the Bermuda Maritime Museum and the BMA.

?This exhibit is remarkable in that it showcases the history of banknotes in Bermuda in its entirety, from inception to present day ? from Pounds Sterling issued by the Bermuda Government to Bermuda Dollars issued by the Bermuda Monetary Authority,? the Minister said.

The exhibit is housed in the Commissioner?s House alongside other culturally important exhibits, such as the ?Slave Trade and Slavery in Bermuda?, and the ?Azores and Bermuda? and will complement the Bank of Bermuda coin collection already on display.

Marcia Woolridge-Allwood, director of Corporate and Finance at the BMA said, ?We are honoured to be able to bring this very significant part of the island?s history back for the enjoyment of the Bermuda public and our visitors alike.?

?We would also like to thank our friends at the Bermuda Maritime Museum as well as our long standing note printing partners, Thomas De La Rue, who provided some of the artefacts on display, for their assistance and support in making this exhibit possible.?

The Banknotes of Bermuda exhibit is the second of its kind produced by the BMA.

The first, which was opened in 1992 to coincide with the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus and his journey to the New World, was housed in the Shifting House on the grounds of the Maritime Museum.

The popular exhibit was closed in early 2005 to make way for much needed renovations to the Shifting House.
