Rita and Ziggy Marley to play at National Stadium
for their first concert together in honour of the reggae king.
And local concert promoter Mr. Choy Aming yesterday said he expects the August 22 National Stadium show to sell out.
Rita Marley, with an entourage of 20 people including her four children from Bob Marley, Ziggy, Cedella, Stephen and Sharon, will arrive in Bermuda next Friday.
"We've been planning this show for about a year,'' Mr. Aming said. "So they all set aside time to do the show which has never been done anywhere else in the world.'' Marley, who made reggae popular around the world, died in May, 1981.
Rita Marley is expected to perform many songs from her late husband's extensive repertoire as well as those from her latest album "We Must Carry On''.
Ziggy Marley, who has performed to sell-out crowds in Bermuda on two previous occasions, is expected to entertain the audience with sounds from all his albums, including the latest "Jahmakya''. He will be backed up by the Melody Makers.
Mr. Aming, who lost nearly $60,000 due to gate crashers and ticket fraud at last month's Reggae Festival at the stadium, said: "This (concert) is going to be a sell-out.'' It is also expected to draw hundreds of visitors from overseas.
The last performer to attract some 100 overseas visitors to Bermuda was R&B American star Luther Vandross in July, 1990. And Mr. Aming estimated that the Marley concert will draw more.
He added that security will be "tight'', with 25 private security guards and 10 dogs expected to be on the look out for gate crashers.
And tickets, which cannot be duplicated, are being printed.
They will go on sale for $45 at Sound Stage, Frith's Liquors and Clay House Inn tomorrow.
Group discounts are available by calling 292-3193.
The concert, also featuring The Empress Mennen Dancers will be held from 8.30 p.m. to 1 a.m.
SOON COME -- Rita Marley, right, the widow of late reggae superstar Bob Marley, left, will be united with her children at an August 22 concert at National Stadium.
