Don't deal with anyone but Darrell warns discount travel company
Bermuda's exclusive distributor of Hotel Express Enterprises travel discount club memberships fears others may be selling memberships without proper certification from the Dallas-based company.
Mr. Kevin Darrell, who spent $20,000 for the exclusive rights to sell club memberships, claims he may have lost up to $1,750 in sales after at least three other Bermuda residents may have sold at least 150 memberships each at $50.
The club's "Gold Cards'', give members discounts on hotels, cruises, car and motor home rentals as well as discount rates on airfares.
"I just want to do things right,'' said the Howard University student, who signed up to help generate money to pay for university costs.
"I didn't spend $20,000 to help support someone else.'' Not only is Mr. Darrell claiming loss of revenue from new sales but also from renewals which should be sold through his exclusive rights.
"I've had customers come back to me and say they've heard of other people who have purchased memberships,'' said Mr. Darrell. Since they did not purchase the membership from him, Mr. Darrell became concerned about where they were getting the memberships from.
Mr. Darrell said Hotel Express Enterprises is in the process of converting the way it activates memberships and anyone on the Island who purchases a membership from another seller here will soon end up with an invalid membership.
A spokesperson for Hotel Express International confirmed they had awarded Mr.
Darrell exclusive rights to sell memberships in Bermuda.
Independent representatives are selling memberships from the left-over stock they acquired before the exclusive deal, said the spokesperson. He added that the company was working with Mr. Darrell to stamp out the problem.
Independent sellers are required to sell through Mr. Darrell, the spokesperson said.
