Islanders close in on league title

St David's are on the brink of the Premier Division title after squeezing out a 12-run victory over Cleveland that eliminated their Eastern Counties rivals from the title race which is now down to three teams, including Southampton Rangers and Willow Cuts.Cleveland were well placed in their run chase as Damali Bell and Allan Douglas Jr shared in a 40-run stand for the fifth wicket which took them to 117 when Bell (27) was bowled by George O'Brien in the first over of his second spell.On the next ball, O'Brien trapped Shakai Darrell lbw to make it 117-6, only to see Cleveland fight back again with a stand of 57 for the seventh wicket between Douglas and Dennis Musson.Musson was caught on the long-on boundary for 14 going for an unnecessary big hit off Rudell Pitcher and then St David's struck again when Makai Young was trapped lbw by Delyone Borden.Douglas held the key to Cleveland's hopes of a win, playing some dashing shots on his way to 82 from 74 balls before he was ninth out when he drove a waist-high chance straight to OJ Pitcher at short extra cover to end an innings that contained seven fours and five sixes. Treadwell Gibbons, who retired hurt early in the Cleveland innings, returned to the crease at 195-9 and he struck 20 of the remaining runs in taking Cleveland to the verge of victory with his stand of 26 with Tamauri Tucker.Gibbons was last out on the first ball of the 47th over, caught on the leg side by Rudell Pitcher trying to turn a ball from OJ Pitcher around the corner.Pitcher had just brought himself back on at the northern end and he struck immediately to remove Gibbons for 23.Earlier, Chris Douglas hit 37 off 37 balls including eight fours to get Cleveland off to a 33-run opening stand in five overs with Jason Anderson who was first out after scoring three runs.Rudell Pitcher claimed three for 42 and George O'Brien three for 48 while Borden had two for 39.Fiqre Crockwell scored his first century of the season, 108 off 151 balls with 17 fours, to lead the St David's batting while opener McLaren Lowe supported with 30 and Rudell Pitcher 46 not out from three sixes and four fours.Douglas also led the Cleveland bowling, taking three for 39 from 10 overs.Southampton Rangers 311 for nineDevonshire Rec 69 all outSouthampton Rangers made light work of Devonshire Rec at Southampton Oval, cruising to a comprehensive 242-run victory at home to remain in the title race with one match remaining.Dion Stovell smashed 12 fours and two sixes to spearhead the Rangers batting in a knock of 77 as they collected a vital extra batting point for posting 300. Curtis Jackson also took a liking to the Devonshire Rec bowling, hitting eight fours and three sixes in his knock of 57.Janeiro Tucker (28) and Derrick Brangman (26) also contributed with the bat.Rangers also allocated 12 runs for a slow overs rate.Lamont Brangman took three wickets for 34 runs, while Steven Bremar took two for 62.In reply, Rec were bowled out for 69 in 23.3 overs, with Sean Perinchief top scoring with 18.Dennis Williams was the next high man with 14.Derrick Brangman grabbed five wickets for 20 runs to lead the Rangers bowling against his former team while and Tucker chipped in with three wickets for 25 runs.Flatts 206St George's 209 for sixFather and son Herbie and Oronde Bascome led St. George's to a hard-fought four-wicket victory at Wellington Oval after Flatts had them in early trouble at 31-4.The Bascomes shared in an unbroken seventh wicket stand of 94 as they took the score from 115 to 209, with captain Oronde scoring 91 not out with 13 fours and two sixes and Herbie unbeaten on 39 including five fours and two sixes.Macai Simmons, who added 71 for the fifth wicket with his captain, scored a valuable 42 that contained three sixes and three fours.St George's were in early trouble at 18-3 after five overs before the captain-led recovery began. Kijuan Franks claimed three for 75 to lead the Flatts bowling.Earlier, Flatts were led in the batting by Cofield Robinson's 84 not out which contained 11 fours and two sixes, after they, too, were in early trouble at 8-2. Nelson Bascome jr scored 45 while a generous helping of 49 extras enabled Flatts to pass the 200 mark.The two Bascomes also led the bowling for St George's. Oronde claimed four for 31 from six overs and younger brother Onias three for 26 from eight.Western Stars 178 all outWarwick 67 all outThe father and son tandem of Wayne and Seth Campbell helped Western Stars to a 111-run win over Warwick at St John's Field yesterday.Batting first, Stars were led by Wayne Campbell (34) and Temiko Wilson (21) as they managed to get to 178 before being bowled all out in 41.4 overs.Chare Smith claimed four wickets for 36 runs from his ten overs, while Jordan Hill chipped in with two wickets for nine runs from his allotted overs.In reply, only Lionel Cann (25) got into double figures as Warwick were bowled out for 67 in 24 overs.Kyle Swan (8) was the next high man in the run chase.Seth Campbell snatched four wickets for 25 runs in his ten overs to make sure there wouldn't be any surprise on the day, while Brian Hall grabbed three scalps for nine runs form seven overs of bowling.Willow Cuts 215PHC 33Malachi Jones ripped through the PHC batting with a six-wicket haul as Willow Cuts kept their league hopes alive at PHC Field.Cuts, who meet St. David's next weekend at White Hill Field, were led in the batting by captain Dwight Basden's 60 which was supported by 22 from Chris Foggo and 20 from Kavon Fubler.Sheroy Fubler took the remaining four wickets for Willow Cuts.** Bailey's Bay bounced back from their Eastern Counties thrashing with a win over Somerset Bridge at White Hill Field yesterday. No futher details were available.
