The second heat saw the fastest time recorded at the track this season and was just a fifth of a second off the track record.

Michael De Costa's Inwood Stables had two entries in the championship, with GV Colonel Spence finishing second and Grand Shady finishing third.

Dennis Lister, Minister of Youth and Sport, was on hand to present the prizes at the end of the event.

For the first time, the weekend's racing featured a trotting division which was won by the veteran Diamondway.

Owned by Joe Viera's Tanglewood Stables and driven by 72-year-old Michael (Killer) Compagnon, Diamondway won both of his heats in 1:10.3 and 1:10.4 Michael Roberts and Ponder Babe won the reserve division with a double victory in times of 1:07.3 and 1:08.

The consolation final was won by Trott Acre Byrd driven by Robert Lopes.

A spokesman for the Driving Horse and Pony Club committee said he wanted to thank all those who had helped to make this a very successful season.

"The overwhelming support of the general public has been greatly appreciated as harness pony racing continues its steady rise in popularity in Bermuda,'' he said.

"This will probably be the last season under this format as we plan to present a shorter winter season and, in addition, a spring meet right after the annual agricultural exhibition.'' SMITH LEADS LASER FLEET SLG Smith leads Laser fleet For the third week in a row sailors had to contend with erratic northerly winds on Hamilton Harbour during the Laser Frostbite series.

Malcolm Smith dominated again, producing one of the lowest final scores of the season -- 11 points.

Smith recorded five first place finishes and three seconds, discarding a fourth and a fifth.

This weekend he will be sailing in the Sunfish Class Midwinter's in Clearwater Beach, Florida.

The remaining wins were split between Todd Olson with three and Brett Wright with two. Olson finished second overall on 14 points with Wright third on 18 points.

Fourth on the day was Mike Lewis who saw off Ted Wood in a tiebreaker.

Sunday was the last race day of the winter series. During the season 35 sailors competed in a total of 110 races.

The maximum turnout was 22 and the low 11.

The overall score was calculated by counting the best 55 results from each sailor.

The top five were: Malcolm Smith (69 points), Brett Wright (104), Christian Luthi (146), Todd Olson (164) and Craig Davis (168).

The Laser National Championships will be held in the Great Sound this Saturday and Sunday.
