Pair set sights on elusive ribbon

Katie Moniz

Two Bermuda junior riders will fly to Jamaica later this month to compete in the Caribbean Equestrian Association's Junior Jumping Competition.

Jaeda Smith and Katie Moniz were selected by the Bermuda Equestrian Federation to represent Bermuda at the final leg of the competition which will be staged in Kingston on November 21.

The pair will represent Bermuda for the first time in the show jumping ring internationally and are hoping to ride well enough to bring home the much desired blue ribbon that has escaped the Bermuda team for five years now.

The Caribbean Equestrian Association's competition sees the likes of Antigua, Barbados, Cayman, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Bermuda compete over the course of the year.

Three teams travel to the islands according to their rotation for the year and are represented by two riders, one 14-years-old and the other under 16-years-old.

Smith will compete in the older division.

The girls will ride a series of local horses from Jamaica and what makes this competition tough is that the visiting riders have only five minutes to get used to their mounts before tackling the course.

Smith has been riding for six years and rides out of Inwood Stable under the tutelage of veteran coach Nick DeCosta.

Moniz, who is Bermudian but now resides in Georgia, US, has been has been riding since the age of five and is coached by Darren Graziano of DG Ventures, Wellington, Florida and Bill Lowry of Winsor Farm Sales, North Scituate, Rhode Island.

Michael Rodrigues will be the travelling coach for the girls.

The 2010 competition will resume in January with the Bermuda leg taking place on May 8-9.

Jaeda Smith will compete in the 16 and under division in Jamaica later this month.
