Damon Ming, the Dandy Town captain, believes his side made a huge stride in the race for the Premier Division title by defeating Southampton Rangers 4-1 at the Southampton Oval at the weekend.

Town issued a statement of intent to their title rivals, North Village and Somerset Trojans, suggesting they are determined not to relinquish their two-point lead at the top of the table.

Reflecting on the win, and looking forward to Town’s crunch away game at St David’s this weekend, Ming has urged his team-mates to focus on completing the job with just two league games remaining.

“The win was great for us given the fact we have had a tough time of things against Rangers recently,” Ming said. “We protected our two-point lead but [North] Village have to get some credit for keeping up the pace as well and pushing us the entire way.

“I stressed after our recent match against Somerset [Trojans], where we lost at home, that we can’t look too far ahead in this campaign because when you get ahead of yourself you falter. We have to take every game as it comes, and we have to approach the St David’s match in the same way we did the Rangers game. In many ways, it’s a cup final and everything is on the line.

“If we can do that then I think we have a real good chance of lifting the trophy at the end of the season.”

Town have won successive games since a bad patch of form which saw them briefly surrender top spot to Trojans.

Continuing their winning ways at Lord’s will be another important step to claiming the title they last won in 2011-12.

St David’s will no be pushover though, having breathed fresh life into their survival hopes with a 2-1 win over Wolves at Devonshire Recreation Club on Sunday.

“St David’s won’t be easy, they got a huge result in their match Sunday and will be up for the fight knowing they must continue to win in order to maintain their status,” said Ming, whose side take on Devonshire Cougars, the dethroned champions, in the final weekend of the league season.

“For us, on the other hand, it is a matter of continuing on the road we are on at the moment, and that’s the league title,”

Ming also praised Temiko Wilson, the Town striker, whose hat-trick propelled Town to their emphatic win over relegation-threatened Rangers.

“I really believe that the hard work Temiko has been putting in is finally coming out at a crucial time.”

The Bermuda Football Association announced that the postponed match between Flanagan’s Onions and Somerset Trojans from Saturday night has been rescheduled for March 19 at Goose Gosling Field. Kick-off is at 9.15pm.

The First Division match between BAA Wanderers and X-Roads, which was also cancelled, will be played on March 12 at 7.15pm at the same venue.
