Elite League teams are hit by injuries and suspensions
The Elite Player League has been hit by a rash of injuries, suspensions, and availability issues that means 15 players will miss today’s two matches. With 11 Bermuda internationals amongst that number, Bermuda Cricket Board have been forced to slightly re-jig the teams for the games at the National Sports Centre.Among the missing, are Delyone Borden and Jason Anderson, who are suspended for failing to play last weekend, and Malachi Jones, who is serving a two game suspension this weekend for an incident in the Belco Cup semi-final between Willow Cuts and Southampton Rangers. On top of that, the likes of George O’Brien (hand), Irving Romaine (finger) and Dwayne Leverock (foot) are all out injured, while Lateef Trott, Rodney Trott and Kyle Hodsoll are all unavailable for personal reasons. However, those absences have given the likes of Stephen Bremar Jr and Detroy Smith the chance to come in, and they will play for Symonds XI and Simmons XI respectively. While the EPL is taking a while to grab attention of fans and players alike, the Premier Division is having no such trouble, and tomorrow’s matches could see St David’s further cement their position as title favourites.Having handed Southampton Rangers a 169-run thrashing at Southampton Oval last weekend, the two sides meet at Lords in a game that the defending champions will feel they have to win.St David’s opened up a 17 point gap over their rivals after the first game, and another hefty win would certainly make it difficult for other sides to catch them.Bailey’s Bay however may fancy their chances, especially after they racked up a convincing win of their own against Social Club. Bay take on St George’s at Sea Breeze Oval, with Clay Smith’s newly-promoted team fortunate to have a win under their belts.By Smith’s own admission they should have lost to Devonshire Rec last time out, and Bay are unlikely to be afflicted by the mental breakdown that cost Rec so dear.Social Club meanwhile will never have a better opportunity to get a win against one of the league’s better teams, as they take on a Willow Cuts side deprived of their main strike bowlers.Malachi Jones, who will miss the game through suspension, and George O’Brien, who broke his hand last week, are both expected to be out of the game at Wellington Oval. Cuts were also less than convincing in their opening win over PHC, dropping several catches, and were largely saved from defeat by the controversial dismissal of Kyle Lightbourne.PHC though should get their first win of the season under their belts tomorrow at Devonshire Rec in a match that sees Chris Foggo return to his old stomping ground for the first time as a Zebras player. With Kevin Tucker and Khiry Furbert expected to return to the side, PHC should be too strong for Rec, although former PHC pair Dean Stephens and Ricardo Brangman may have something to say about that. The First Division should also finally get under way tomorrow, although that will largely depend on the teams themselves. Western Stars and Somerset were due to play last weekend, but opted not to do so when they realised they would be without umpires.Once again the lower tier has no officials assigned to their games, with the BCB feeling that the limited resources available should be concentrated on the top flight. If they do play, Somerset Bridge and Western Stars are scheduled to meet at Southampton Oval, while Warwick face Cleveland at St John’s Field, and Somerset host Flatts.
