Amanda Temple’s ‘The Fruit of Time and Tide’ wins 2014 Charman People’s Prize

A sculpture by artist Amanda Temple has been awarded the Charman People’s Choice Prize based on votes from members of the public.

The sculpture, titled ‘The Fruit of Time and Tide’, was selected based on more than 100 votes submitted at the Masterworks Gallery.

Along with the honour associated with the award, Ms Temple was also presented with $1,000 for the victory.

“Each year during the Charman Prize we give the public a chance to vote for the piece that they feel deserves special recognition,” a Masterworks spokesman said. “We have always placed great importance on this award and consider it a huge honour for the artist who wins as it expresses what work speaks to the people of Bermuda the most.

The spokesman said ‘The Fruit of Time and Tide’ won “what was a very closely contested ballad and, although several other works stacked up a lot of votes, none could push ‘The Fruit of Time and Tide’ from the top spot.

“Everyone at Masterworks was very excited by the enthusiasm and earnestness with which the votes were cast, by members, tourists and non members alike, and we are very proud that so many of the votes were cast at our open day on New Year’s Day — a day each year were the museum opens it doors to many new people who may not have visited us before.”

Rhona Emmerson and Pierangelo LanFranchi were named runners up for the People’s Choice award, with Ms Emmerson also winning the category of Distinctive and Convincing Style.

Carol Gracie was honoured for her use of materials, Christopher G Marson won the Design and Composition award, while Chikako Hoshina won the Source and Inspiration award.
