Bach trophy music to their ears

The Bermuda Regional Bridge Tournament, in which nearly 450 players participated, ended on Saturday evening with a gala prize-giving and dinner dance. Vera Petty and Roman Smolski of Bermuda once again won the Norman Bach Trophy for the local players gaining the most Masterpoints during the tournament.

The Maude Lines Trophy for the overseas players gaining the most Masterpoints in the tournament was won by Karen and Jade Barrett from Vancouver, Canada. The prize for the most points gained by a Bermuda Bridge Club player with under 20 points at the start of the tournament went to Russell Craft.

At the end of the week, the two-session Stratified Open Pairs resulted in a clean sweep for Bermuda with Vera Petty and Roman Smolski taking top honours in Flight A, Sally and David Sykes winning Flight B and Wendy and Richard Gray winning Flight C.

In the Friday/Saturday Flighted Swiss Teams Steve Ball and Phil Shadick, playing with a Canadian couple, won Flight B and Julia Lunn, Pat Siddle, Gordon Bussell and Dick Meredith won Flight C. The Flight A event was won by an American/Canadian team headed by Sharon Fairchild, the President of the American Contract Bridge League. During the tournament Wendy and Richard Gray, Elizabeth McKee and Peggy Thompson won enough points to achieve the rank of Life Master.
