Six teens to try out for Red Bull team
The father of Bermuda's motor racing teen star who was killed in a tragic accident said that his son paved the way for other young people to pursue a career in racing.
Toriano Wilson's dad, Dennis Wilson said that his sons were some of the first kids in Bermuda to start racing.
He said: "My sons Toriano and Keanu got into racing because I was a racer. They were one of the first to race on the international stage when we went to Spain."
Mr. Wilson said that six young people in Bermuda have been invited to try out for the USA Red Bull Rookies Cup team.
"Last year 120 kids were invited and they picked 25 kids (one being Toriano) to join the team.
"I think that all six of the youths going have a chance of being picked for the team," he said.
The Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup is a unique program for fostering motorcycle talent in promising young riders who compete on actual road racing circuits on identical bikes and under identical conditions.
It is designed to create a level playing field so that the best and the brightest 13 to 17-year-olds emerge at the top and no young talent is overlooked due to a lack of financial resources or professional backing.
Mr. Wilson said: "When they pick the team, they just don't look at riding ability alone, they also look at attitude, aptitude, their family interaction — they are looking for the complete package, there is more to it then just being fast on a motorcycle."
When asked what he had to say to parents who may feel that extreme sports such, as motorcycle racing is dangerous he said: "Every sport is dangerous.
"I can't really speak on that cause I'm a racer. For me, danger was never a question.
"We race (my family), this is what we are.
"I would encourage anyone to follow your dreams and live your life to the fullest."
Mr. Wilson said that his youngest son, Khyren would be racing this weekend, as racing will be returning to the track.
