Board stands firm on replay

Association (BCUA), the Bermuda Cricket Board of Control (BCBC) yesterday stood firm on its decision to replay the league match between St. David's and Devonshire Rec.

"In considering the protest by Devonshire Rec., the reports given by the two umpires and the scorer's record of the game, it was obvious that Law 22, paragraph seven had been breached,'' read a press release authored by BCBC vice-president Clarence Tucker.

The law states: "If, for any reason, a bowler is incapacitated while running up to bowl the first ball of an over, or is incapacitated or suspended during an over, the umpire shall call and signal `dead ball' and another bowler shall be allowed to bowl or complete the over from the same end, provided only that he shall not bowl two overs, or part thereof, consecutively in one innings.'' In the aforementioned match St. David's fast-bowler Dale Fox, who had earlier been called for "chucking'' by both umpires had an over completed by team captain James Pace.

The BCBC's statement indicated that it was frustration and not incapacitation that befell Fox and that "the on umpire erred when he allowed James Pace to complete the over'' thus the need for a replay.

Meanwhile, president Ed Bailey said: "While the umpires have discretion over regulations surrounding matches they do not have that same discretion regarding laws of the game...and this incident involved law.'' The Women's Cup Match will be played at White Hill field tomorrow, starting at noon.
