Sugarbush in sweet position at half-way stage of Goodwill

Robert Castle of the Country Club of Buffalo watches his chip onto the green at the ninth hole at Belmont Hills during the second round of the annual Goodwill Tournament yesterday.

Sugarbush Golf Club posted a second consecutive 12-under par 58 to take the lead in the team net division after the second round of the 2008 Goodwill Tournament.

Playing at the par-70 Belmont Hills, the team of professional Ron Philo Jr, a regular visitor to the Island, and amateurs Julian Harrison, Wade Jerett and Robert Gunn, will take a one-shot lead into tomorrow's third round ahead of Sunnybrook GC whose 59 yesterday gave them a two-round total of 117.

Philo has had a good couple of days and is currently tied at the top of the junior pro stableford competition alongside Tim Conley on 40 points.

In third place is Keir Smith of The National GC who has a two-day total of 39 points.

The highlight of yesterday, however, was a hole-in-one from Tim Fay of Wannamoisett CC on the difficult par-three 17th at Riddell's Bay. It was the only bright point in an otherwise disappointing day for the team of Fay, Tim Knox, Angelo Pimental and professional Troy Pare, who comibined for a 61 yesterday and at 15-under for the two days are nine shots off the lead in the net competition.

Things are equally tight in the senior net division with Bellewood GC and North Shore GC tied for a share of the lead with totals of 118.

In third place with a total of 119 is Raleigh Country Club, a team made up of professional Greg Stenzel and amateurs Cecil Davis Jr, Dan Pollman and Phil Palmeri.

In the junior gross competition, second day leaders are Cyprian Keyes GC with a total of 125, led by professional Terry O'Hara and team-mates Dan Falcucci, Dave Falcucci and Peter Boler and Diamondback GC led by Conley and team-mates Daniel Augustus, who was the top amateur at last week's annual Gosling's Invitational, John Mitchell and Mike Boorman.

In the senior division, North Shore are leading at the half-way stage with a total of 129 ahead of Bellewood with 132 and Montebello GC led by professional Jerry Bruner alongside Marty Svensen, John Rayner and Tom Steinoff.

Today is a rest day in the main event although players can compete in a 'Skins' game.

Some 87 teams, the majority from overseas, are playing in the annual tournament, one of the oldest on Bermuda's golfing calendar.

Throughout the week they will all play on four courses – Mid Ocean Club, Riddell's Bay, Tucker's Point and Belmont Hills.
